Schloss Neuschwanstein where to stay

I have 2 days to plan outside of other plans, flying into Munich, arriving in the morning. Planning to take a train to Fussen. Is it best to stay in Fussen or closer to the castle? I haven’t booked a tour or tickets, yet.
Is one day there enough?

We did it one a day trip from Munich. We saw both castles, Hohenschwangau followed by Neuschwanstein. Don't miss Hohenschwangau, its completely furnished and you will learn all about the family during that tour.

If you are just going to see the castle just do it as a day trip arriving as early as possible. The castle is like a 15 minute bus ride from Fussen but then you have to walk up hill; I went there two months ago on a day trip from Augsburg. I did not tour the inside but went up to get the iconic view from Marienbruck.

I was not a fan of the castle but loved the time we spent in Fussen. There is an interesting small museum there.

The actual tour of the inside of N-stein is only 20-30 minutes. So you'll spend more time getting up to it and back down than being there. So not a whole days worth of activity.

If you are only using the train, and not renting a car, then stay in Fussen. Take the bus to the castle area. If you are going to that length just to see N'stein, then you might as well make it worth the time, and tour thru Hohenschwangau too. It's at least a real palace, and was actually lived in. Fussen is pretty, and worth a walk around. With 2 days, one night, if you were going to rent a car I'd suggest also visiting Schloss Linderhof, Ettal, and maybe Oberammergau, and sleeping in Garmisch.

Fussen is very close to Neuschwanstein. It’s a lovely old town to stay in. We like Fussen a lot. We were just there 2 weeks ago.

We didn’t tour Neuschwanstein, as the bus to the castle wasn’t running due to winter conditions there. It’s a long walk up and there was still a crowd going to tour it, so we didn’t bother. We did tour Hohenschwangau. This doesn’t seem to ever get a crowd, as we walked up, bought ticketsand there were maybe a dozen people on our tour. No lines, no wait.

I have been a few times before (my partner hasn’t ever been) and Hohenschwangau has always been quieter, easier to tour right away.

We did one day in Fussen and it was enough. Didn't go in the castle but took the bus up there and hiked up to the base and went to Mary's Bridge. It's a cute little town. We had a car though so we drove to the treetop walk just ouside town then went did the apline slide in Oberammergau before driving to Munich.

No car- stay in Fussen and take the bus to the castles.

With car- look at staying in Schwangau. Some of the hotels here have nice view of Nstein.
We stayed at the Hotel Waldmann on Parkstrasse.

If you book your tickets for a 10 am or 10:30 am entry to NStein, you can also visit Hohenschwangau castle at 2:30 pm
For 10 am entry, you should arrive at the base around 8:30 am -9 am, to take the shuttle bus, the horse carriage or walk up to the castle. (45 minute uphill walk)
I recommend the shuttle bus to get up there, visit Marienbrucke (the bridge) for pics and then walk down from the bus stop to the castle. You want to be there 15 minutes before your timed entry. After your visit, go back down to the ticket office, parking and restaurants area and Have lunch, then visit Hohenschwangau.
You can then catch the bus back to Fussen around 4pm.

Yes, you can do both castles in one day, if you time it right and get there early and have tickets.
After a long day, I'd probably stay in Fussen one more night and train back to Munich in the morning.
