Unless you have visited Frankfurt before I suggest you stay there. It has far more to offer than I realized and I am sure Jo will chime in and give you lots of ideas of what to see and do.

If you choose another location, Heidelberg is one of my favorite places to stay.

A big vote for Heppenheim. It's about 30 mins south of Frankfurt Airport and perfectly quaint and relaxing for a final night's stay. We loved it. We were driving so I'm not sure how it connected to public transportation, though.

"Scenic towns close to Frankfurt am Main"

Bingen has some nice scenery.
Mouse Tower and Ehrenfels Castle ruins

Ferry across the Rhine to Rüdesheim in just a few minutes - a touristy but nice place for a meal and maybe a chairlift ride for a look out over the town, the vineyards, and the river.

I'd stay here in Bingen:
NH Bingen Hotelon the Rhine promenade. Nice breakfast room with full-length windows on the river and vineyards.

Early flight? On most mornings there are 5 direct trains from Bingen to FRA between 5:45 am and 8:00 am, and 4 other departures that require a change of train. The direct trains from Bingen Hbf take just 37 to 58 minutes to reach the FRA station. You can walk from the NH Bingen to Bingen Hbf station.

We really enjoyed Mainz. The Chagall stained glass in the church there is pretty cool. There are also Roman ruins under a mall - they've done a really nice job in presenting them. The train runs direct from to/from the airport in about 20 minutes.

Myriad towns to stay in though I do hope you set aside some time to explore one of the oldest and most historic cities in Germany.

Suggested towns: Eltiville on the Rhine, Bad Soden, Kronberg, Idstein, Seligenstadt, Bad Homburg, Königstein, Marburg.
All are within 1 hour from Frankfurt and the airport is 11 min. away from the main train station in Frankfurt.

Suggested hotels in pretty, residential neighborhoods of Frankfurt: Alexander am Zoo in Bornheim, Hotel Beethoven, Hotel Liebieg, Hotel Goelz, Durazi Guest House, all in Westend, Hotel am Berg in Sachsenhausen.

Hi,

If you want to choose a town directly north of Frankfurt, there is one situated between Frankfurt and Gießen....Butzbach/Hessen., ca 40 Km from Frankfurt.

From what direction are you coming? As much as I like Heppenheim (I can see the castle from where I live), it wouldn't make sense if you're coming from the north or southeast.
