Salzburg to Amsterdam - intermediate stop

We are taking the Rick Steves tour ending in Vienna and have 5 days before we have to be in Amsterdam for our flight home. We plan to spend 2 days in Salzburg and then train to some place that is somewhat in the middle of the route back to Amsterdam. Any suggestions would be appreciated. We thought about Munich but it is Octoberfest and we aren't into that and it would still be too far to train in one day.

Barb:

You don't say what cities you've seen on your Rick Steves tour.
Have you bought your tickets yet? If tickets have not been purchased, would you consider flying open jaw out of another city that's not so far from Salzburg?
If you've got to fly out of Amsterdam, have you already toured that city?
From Salzburg, you could take a train through Nurnberg, Wurzburg and Frankfort to Bacharach--on the Rhine River. From there, you could go north stopping at Cologne. Then take the train into Amsterdam.
A little more info would go a long way to getting some help.

An easy choice would be to spend a couple days exploring the towns of the Rhine gorge, such as St Goar, Bacharach, and Oberwesel.

Thanks for your input. We have our tickets - flyer miles - only choice. On the RS tour we start in Berlin-Dresden-Prague-Vienna. We arrive 4 days before the tour and will spend it in Amsterdam. The Rhine seems the obvious choice and I love St. Goar (my husband hasn't been there) but maybe there are other less touristy but user friendly spots someone can recommend. We have traveled a lot in Europe on our own but this is our first RS tour - last year in Italy, Croatia & Slovenia.

Wuerzburg and Bamberg could make for an enjoyable couple of days.

Hi,

Last summer I spent a day in Amsterdam, went there from Frankfurt on the ICE direct as a day trip. Frankfurt is my suggestion for a place in between. There is a direct connection between the two cities. From Frankfurt to Salzburg, I suggest Frankfurt to Munich direct on the ICE, then change to the RJ train to Salzburg.
