Salzburg / Kelsteinhaus / Saltmine

Hello All -

I am wondering whether it is possible (with children) to do both Kelsteinhaus and the Salt mine on the same day traveling from and back to Salzburg where we will be staying. Any advice on whether to try for both (and in what order if so) would be greatly appreciated! We would be using public transportation so I think we would take a bus from Salzburg to the bus station in Obersalzburg (if I am not mistaken) which I think is a fairly frequent route (although I am not sure when the last bus is). Also, I think the salt mine is open daily but I am not sure about Kelsteinhaus and the bunkers nearby.

Thank you!

A friend and I did both the salt mine and Kehlsteinhaus on a day trip from Salzburg in late May. I think you could do this pretty easily with kids, too. We did the earliest tour at the salt mine first and then headed to Kehlsteinhaus. Bus 840 takes you from Salzburg to the salt mine bus stop (Berchtesgaden Salzbergwerk). It's a short walk from the bus stop to the salt mine. After the tour, you can walk back to the bus stop to catch Bus 840/837/848 on to Berchtesgaden's main train/bus station (Hbf/ZOB) OR walk 2.2 km through a residential area and then along the river to get to the Hbf/ZOB (we did the latter). From the Hbf/ZOB, you can catch Bus 838 out to the Dokumentation Obersalzberg stop, where you will find the bus departure area for Kehlsteinhaus, as well as the Documentation Center, though the Documentation Center is closed until next spring.
