Rügen in September

I will be visiting Germany in September, and as part of that trip, I plan to spend a couple of nights on Rügen.

I expect that in September the season will be winding down, and the island will be quieter than in the summer months. I really just want to hike and enjoy nature while I'm there. I found a seaside apartment in Sassnitz, since that will put me on the doorstep of Jasmund National Park.

My question is, do trains from Stralsund to Sassnitz run year-round? I know that it's early to be checking schedules, but bahn.com doesn't show anything for late September which has me worried. If I need to rent a car, I want to make those arrangements early.

I would be very surprised if there was no rail service at all during that time period. Sassnitz is a major ferry port from Sweden, so it would be strange if the rail service there only operated seasonally. And an article about that rail corridor on German Wikipedia, which is usually very comprehensive, makes no mention of season closures. If there is no rail service, than there should at least be bus service.

That being said... Rügen really is best explored by car.

Thanks, Tom!

I was sort of worried/expecting to hear that a car is the best way to see the island. To be frank, driving abroad is not my cup of tea. I've only done it once (in Lithuania), and it was not enjoyable. However, if I can pick up the car in Stralsund, and just use it around the island, I may be persuadable. :)

RE: For and against driving on Rügen.

For: I have lasting mental images of Rügen from my trip there, and most were of the countryside. The searing colors of the green fields highlighted against the deep blue northern sky. The small little hamlets that look like something out of a Tolkien book. You won't be able to stop and linger at these small moments if you limit yourself to public transportation. Plus, public transit services mostly the towns on the island. As beautiful as the countryside is, I found several of the towns surprisingly ugly. Lots of Plattenbau from the DDR period and quite a bit of neglect. Even Sassnitz was a little rougher around the edges than I suspected. Binz, though, is beautiful.

Against: If your main goal is to visit Jasmund National Park, you don't really need a car. You can easily catch a bus from Sassnitz, and you can't drive to the main visitor center anyway (which provides easy access to a nice cliff and beach walk). It's only accessible by a shuttle bus from the outside of the park.

Also, driving in most of Germany could not be simpler, but Rügen probably isn't the place to familiarize yourself. I found directional roadsigns far less comprehensive here than is usual for Germany. And if there's a detour for road construction, you may find yourself needing to take the backroads, which can be very narrow and VERY rough.

but bahn.com doesn't show anything for late September which has me worried.

www.bahn.de presently shows connections until 16 Sep. Maybe there will be some adjustments to the time tables after the holiday season, but certainly, there will be no maior changes.

The time tables of the "Rasender Roland" (a little steam train connecting Putbus with Binz and Goehren) are troughout September the same as in summer:

sla019, thanks for the info.

I'm arriving there on 17 September and leaving on 20 September. Looks like I may be marooned there (if I don't have a rental car), as I cannot seem to find any published bus or train connections to the mainland after 18 September. I can see trains from Sassnitz to Altefähr on the 20th, but there doesn't seem to be anything--train, bus, horse and carriage--that goes across the bridge to Stralsund.

Don't be silly. Of course it's no problem to get from Rügen to Stralsund. It's a very popular holiday destination after all. Usually there is a hourly train from Sassnitz to Stralsund called Hanse-Express, every two hours you can get to Rostock, and during summer Binz is served by ICEs.
You also don't need a car if you stay there for just a few days and want to see the highlights; a car just makes things easier due to the geography of the island.... if you want to see Hiddensee for example.

The train from Berlin Hbf goes via Neustrelitz to Stralsund, the terminus.

Thanks, everyone, for the replies. I'm reassured, and looking forward to seeing Rügen this fall!

The alternate to train or car is bikes. We did a week long bike tour of Rugen and FIschland/Darss und Zingst. A German friend organized the tour but the service renting the bikes and providing luggage transfers was Die Mecklenburger Radtour GmbH in Stralsund.

One of the scenic islands is Hiddensee off of Rugen and reached by ferry. No cars are on Hiddensee, just horse drawn carts, bikes and walkers.

Just adding that we did the bike trip late September/early October about 6 years ago. Early October seemed to be the end of bike season and tourist were on the decline in the Baltic.
