Wondering what route might be best with something interesting/scenic along the way.

Just make sure you purchase a Swiss vignette for your car (40 CHF) and attach it in the right spot on the car. You can buy them as soon as you cross the boreder.
You need one for Austria too, unless you get off the highway and travel the back roads.
To be on the safe side, get an International Drivers Permit at AAA before you go. They are required in Austria.

You don't need that if you leave the Austrian highway A14 at exit Hohenems at the latest, which is the usual exit when going to Luzern via E43 / N3. Alternatively, you could go via Zürich (N1) and leave the Austrian highway at Lustenau, a few km before Hohenems.
