So I will have four days in Munich this September and as I have never been to the area before I am wondering if anyone has any advice. I plan on spending 2 days in Munich, one day going down to the Neuschwanstein Castle and would like to to a day trip to either Rothenburg or Salzburg but I'm having a hard time deciding which. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks
Salzburg. It is a major, historic city, with lots of culture, art, food, music and is overlooked by a scenic fortress. Rothenburg is a small picturesque walled village, that is fun to tour, but has little of significance, especially on a day trip.
Salzburg. Beautiful old town. Easy to see a lot in a day. We've been to Rothenburg once. Loved it. Been to Salzburg 6 times. We keep lovin it. Will most likely visit again.
Salzburg. Much easier to do as a day trip from Munich via train. Use a Bayern Ticket or Meridian Guten Tag ticket.

Another vote for Salzburg.
Salzburg without a doubt. Easier to get to and has a lot more to offer.
Salzburg.
Gorgeous.
However do be aware that loads of people have already discovered it. But absolutely Fab.
Have a Balcan number 2 for me. I had one last week and am already missing it.
Assuming you're planning on using trains (rather than driving), then Salzburg wins hands down for ease and length of travel - 1-1/2 hrs each way vs. 3-1/2 to 4 hrs each way for Rothenburg. As for the actual destination it really depends on what you want to see and/or do. Although I enjoyed Rothenburg for what it is, a small cute walled village but very kitschy, I really preferred spending time in Salzburg.
Nigel, do you mean a "Bosna" #2 from this place?
That's the one. My wife prefers a number 3, me, it's a number 2. If you zoom in on the photo on the website you may be able to read the 5 choices. All in German though so if you can't understand take a dictionary or Google Translate.
Thank you everyone for all the replies!!! I think it will definitely be Salzburg based on the enthusiastic answers I am seeing. I now even have a food suggestion to try! Thanks so much, I cannot wait to get there now.
Neuschwanstein and Rothenburg are too far for day trips. Salzburg is too, for me, but that seems to be your shortest travelling time.
Murnau, Bad Tolz and the lovely Landsberg am Lech are all closer. Dachau and it's pretty town are close by.
