Good morning. We'll be in Germany for 8 days for a family wedding at the end of June. We'd like to spend a short time in either the Rhine or Mosel area after we leave Rothenburg ob de Tauber before flying out from Frankfurt. I spent 1 day in Rudisheim on a very short trip several years ago, taking an excursion on the Rhine with my mother. That's all we had time for, but this time there are 2 days to spare. As I've taken the Rhine excursion, my mother suggests we do the Mosel this time; my husband has seen neither so he has no preference. I'd like to visit Burg Eltz, but will do so whichever we choose. Besides deciding which we'll choose, my dilemma is figuring out where best to drive to when we leave Rothenburg, if we choose the Mosel.
We will leave R. early afternoon, drive to either Mosel or Rhine. If we choose the Rhine, I'll drive to Bingen, so we can boat from there in the morning. If we choose Mosel, where would be a suggested destination? The tentative plan is: depart Rothenburg 1:00, drive to ___, enjoy an evening meal wherever we are, boat excursion the next morning (driving to the best place to join a tour is no problem), taking a train back to where we boarded (we can reverse the drive/train plan if necessary), ending the afternoon visiting Burg Eltz and spending the evening either: 1. driving to a close, quaint village for dinner or 2. driving to Bacharach to spend the night and next morning there before heading to Frankfurt for our departure the 3rd day.
In a nutshell:
1. Drive from Rothenburg to ____ 28 June.
2. Boat tour of M. or R. in the am., Burg Eltz afternoon 29 June
3. Late afternoon or early evening, drive to Bacharach 29 June
4. Early morning drive to Frankfurt for departure 30 June
