Rothenburg in Sept

I have a spare 2 nights (thur and fri) and thinking about staying in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Any recommendations close to the old town area and all the "photo ops" we all love? Places to eat some German food. Walking tours? I did read about Going to Hell night walk.

traveling from Lucerne - fastest trains to take me there?

Thank you,
Ruth

Ruth, are you still planning on Passau and onto Vienna? Rothenburg is a very long detour.

RodT is very small - you can leisurely walk across the center of the old town area in less than 10 minutes. Stay in the old town area, not near it. Hotel Goldener Hirsch is last place I remember staying. Had a nice dinner there too - tiny restaurant full of locals.

PS depending on where you're going after, I'm not sure it would be the best choice of where to go, unless you have it as a bucket list location. Plenty of charming places to see in southern Germany, easier to get to from Luzern.

Stay n the old town. Lots of rooms in all price categories. The entire town is a photo op. Take a walk down to Detwang to see another amazing wooden carving at the church

We stayed at Hotel Burg Gartenpalais last time we were there in 2012. Enjoyed the hotel and its restaurant had good food.

After much thought, I have to give up Rothenburg. Lindau was booked for the island. My next default is Innsbruck, but I really don't need to see another large city. Still starting out in Lucerne, 2 nights ??? and then Passau. (not thrilled about the later, but someone else's choice) Any other suggestions right along train routes as we will not have a vehicle.

A few weeks ago I stayed for a few nights in Ingolstadt, which was surprisingly attractive. Beautiful Cathedral of Our Lady. Assam Church (like that in Munich, but without the visitors). Well preserved historical centre to wander around. And a good base for some attractions around. Neuburg (15 mins away) is a lovely tiny town with ainteresting Renaissance palace (schloß) with a good picture collection and a magnificent chapel. Eichstätt (45 mins, including a 9-minute journey on what with 5 kilometers must be one of the world's shortest railway lines) is a small town, which was the residence of prince-bishops, with again a beautiful cathedral and some peaceful baroque squares. It's all very low key, and most agreeable in a very German way, and almost totally devoid of foreign tourists.
The train from Lucerne takes around 6 hrs and it is 2,5 to Passau, which is hardly more than a direct Lucerne to Passau train.

Ruth, I always drive but you can research times and destinations here- https://www.bahn.com/en/view/index.shtml

Nice small towns , without too much of a detour, Murnau, Bad Tolz and Prien (more for Chiemsee and the Schloss) on the German side. Hall in Tirol and Zell am See on the Austrian side. It may involve a number of changes.
