Rothenburg hotel: which would you choose?

Hello,
I'm going to be in Germany for the month of July, with a few different multi-night stays cobbled together either by train or (in the Alps and on the Romantic Road) by car. I've been going back and forth on accommodations in Rothenburg ob de Tauber. I know some of you would say not to stay there at all, but my plan is to enjoy the town in the morning and evening and to be out on day trips when the town is most crowded.

I reserved the Hotel Rappen, just outside the town walls; I chose it for easy parking and air conditioning. But I'm starting to waffle, thinking it would be more fun to stay in the old town. I'd rather not have to scramble for parking, but there are hotels in the old town that have reserved parking within a couple of blocks, which is fine. But I'm reluctant to give up the air conditioning, in case it's hot; I don't sleep well in a warm, stuffy room.

I know nobody can predict the weather, but I thought I'd ask of those of you who have been there - how did being in the middle of the old town (or not being there) influence your experience? If you were me, what would you do? Thanks in advance.

We stayed at the Rappen a few years ago. It is easy to walk into town. Don't let them give you an attic room: I am 5'4" and could not comfortably stand up in the shower. They had a good breakfast.

For atmosphere I like Goldener Greifen. I believe it was originally built by Heinrich Toppler (1340-1408), a former "mayor" of the city. Nice folks. Breakfast room is a little small. They will do one load of laundry. Location is right off the square. There is no air.

I love staying inside the walls. We like Hotel Eisenhut. In 2019 is was very nice. We returned in 2021 and renovation was going on, so they didn't have the great breakfast room open. However, if the renovation is complete, I would look into this hotel. It's one block from the main square.
Safe travels!

We didn't have a car, however just wanted to say we stayed at Hotel Kloster-Stuble and it was delightful. We could have explored in and around Rothenburg for a week.

I would keep your reservation at Hotel Rappen. At that time of year, ac could really be needed. And you are so close to the wall, it will be worth it for the ease of parking.

We’ve stayed in Rothenburg twice and I love it. The first time we were right on the main square, with the bell tower ringing in our ear. The next time we stayed a few blocks off the main street and much preferred to be a little bit away.

Be sure to wake up early (before 7 am) and just wander through town. It’s magical in the calm morning as the town wakes up.

Thanks, all, for the replies! I think I'm going to keep my current hotel reservation and plan on getting up early to walk into town in the morning before I leave on my day trips, and hope that this will be a "have my cake & eat it too" solution.

I stay within the walls but in a more residential area ( if that is possible .). I don’t think staying just outside the walls will diminish your experience

I know it sounds like you made your decision but just in case, and for future readers of this thread...we are staying at Hotel Reichskuchenmeister at the end of July for 2 nights. They have AC which you pay an extra 5 Euros a night for (well worth it in my opinion) and parking for 10 Euro a night close by. They also have coined self laundry. Breakfast was included.
I haven't stayed yet, but reviews looked good and it suited my want to stay in the old town for a couple of nights.

@sharonscott6952 any feedback from your hotel now that you've been there?
