Rothenburg connections tricky by train

If you are heading to Rothenburg by train and connecting in Steinem, be forewarned. A bunch of us were waiting for the train TO Rothenburg when a train FROM Rothenburg had just arrived. Considering where it was coming from, everyone assumed it would continue in the same direction and wondered why it wasn't moving on...until we found out that this same train coming FROM there was returning TO there: a special line dedicated to getting folks back and forth between Rothenburg and Steinem.

Train access to Rothenburg ob der Tauber is via a shuttle train running only between Rothenburg and Steinach (b Rothenburg ob der Tauber).

It wasn't moving on because the tracks it was on end there. There was nowhere for it to go to move on. It had to go back to Rothenburg.

I made my first trip to Rothenburg in 1988, so I really can't remember why, but I knew then that the train from Steinach to Rothenburg was a shuttle.

As a cultural tidbit, I remember, in 1988, sitting the Rothenburg station in the first coach behind the steam powered switch engine, waiting to go to Steinach at the end of our day in Rothenburg, watching the only employee (I think) - engineer, mechanic, etc - with an oilcan lubricating the key parts of the locomotive's drive train before getting in the cab and taking us to Steinach.

The schedule in the station clearly states the track from which the shuttle leaves for Rothenburg and the time that it leaves. Did you not know how to read station schedules?
