Rothenberg Recommendations for Lodging

Hello,

We will be with a car visiting Rothenberg the summer of 2026 for 2 nights- arriving later in the afternoon on day 1 and leaving after breakfast on day 3. I am starting to plan our trip so that I can make reservations early and get a room that works for our family, plus be able to stay within a budget. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We are looking for a quad/ family room or two doubles in an inn/ guesthouse/ pension with breakfast included. I speak German and true to Rick Steves philosophy, love the idea of immersing into the culture, staying at a place on a side street, having an owner we can talk to. We have 2 children aged 11 and 14 plus my husband and I.

We would like to stay inside the walled area. We are trying to be budget conscious and looking to spend around $250 a night or less for either the 1 quad room or 2 double rooms total. If there is a Rick Steves discount, that is plus! I have the RS book but looking for personal recommendations, too. A/C is not necessary for us.

Thank you, kindly!

Several years ago we styed at the Hotel Gerberhaus, inside the walls in Rothenburg. They have a quad room and a small parking area in the back. Don't know if they are quite in your budget, but close. Depends on the exchange rate when you pay.

Not within the wall but a very short walk to it. Haus Karin. great breakfast. You would probably get thebapartment and another room. .Well under your target price.

We stayed two nights at Gasthaus Alter Keller with our two teens a few years ago. Fabulous location a block from the main road, within the wall. The “family room” consists of an entry hallway where the bathroom is located and two separate rooms, each with two twin beds pushed together. There is no parking, but you can unload luggage, then go park in the city lot within the walls.

The restaurant is one of the best in town, and they serve a great breakfast. It was included in our rate, but we ate there one morning and another day just went to a bakery. The building is about 800 years old and just packed with character, sloping floors and all.
