Rothenburg odT- Sundays and day trips

We will be staying in area of Rothenburg ODT during Christmas market season for 5 days. Looking for suggestions for day trips with the focus being Chrsitmas markets and history. I am a little concerned about Sunday. It looks like the markets are open, but is there a city or town that would be a good choice on that days since my understanding is that a lot will be closed.

Thank you!

My experience is that Sundays need to be planned. Yes, restaurants and Christmas Markets will be open, but little else. I find much comes down to what attracts locals. A wonderful town with vibrant shops on a Saturday, will be dead on Sunday. However a place with lots of cafes, restaurants, beer halls, and other food service places will still be pretty active. Toss in a few museums or other venues, and things are pretty good.

Another problem, is that in the Summer, a Sunday would be packed in the parks, in the winter, things are much more subdued.

Info: your thread will not be found by search for Rothenburg because the headline does not contain the correct name. The term you used is not typical. I recommend to change headline to "Rothenburg odT".

Spelling is important, but case, not so much in search engines. I use all lower case or all upper case all the time, and it doesn't affect the search. And most people here are going to search for the word "Rothenburg" without the initials for ob der Tauber.

I was in Rothenburg on a Sunday during the Xmas markets, and all the gift shops were open, especially the year-round Xmas shops. The open-air markets are very small, but the town is charming, IMHO.
Regensburg has wonderful Xmas markets, and could be a day trip.
Enjoy the magic!

Nuremberg and Wurzburg should have their museums open, but you seriously need to look close at the dates for the Weinacht Markts as many of them will close this year on Sunday or Monday (22-23 DEC) due to the 24-25-26 being holidays. At least in either of those two big towns you have a lot to see even when most of the "attractions" are closed.

it isn't only Rothenburg ob der Tauber on Sundays. Sundays are generally quiet throughout the country, and especially so in Bavaria.
