Flying to Frankfurt in October and would like to take in the romantic road, Salzburg and then make way to Chur to get on the Bernie Express to Tirano. Will rent a car but not sure how to get to chur…. Would like to drop off car in Germany. Any suggestions? Itinerary? I have 6-7 days. Will make my way then to Florence from Tirana ( got that part figured out)
Last May we took the Bernina from Tirano to Chur-Zurich.
Not knowing where you are dropping off the car in Germany, I would suggest a train into Zurich and then local train to Chur.
Tirano is a very small town and I would look at taking a train from there into Milan and then train to Florence.
Look at options for dropping off the car in Lindau or Friedrichshafen, both in Germany on the Bodensee. It is about 2 hours from Lindau to Chur by train (going through Austria) with a minimum of 2 changes on the way.
Or if you do not need to go straight to Chur, there are direct EC trains from Lindau-Reutin to Zurich.
Or drop the car at Friedrichshafen and take the train from there to Schaffhausen, then Basel, then Luzern. All nice places to stop and spend some time.
... would like to take in the romantic road...
Driving after an overnight flight is not recommended. You'll be sleepy, tired, jet lagged, and on unfamilar turf. And Frankfurt isn't the easiest place to drive anyway. Suggest to take a train to Aschaffenburg or Wurzburg, stay overnight, and rent the car there to start your trip on "the road".
Thank you! We were planning on taking train from Frankfurt airport to Würzburg on same day and staying over night!
