Roadtrip: Grindelwald to Fussen

We will be driving from Grindelwald to Fussen in September. Looking for advice and recommendations on any places to stop and see along the way. Not looking for hikes - we will be coming off a week of hiking :)

A few ideas - thoughts?

  • Lucerne (maybe for ~2 hours to walk around the old town area, see the bridge). Curious on parking here? We will have a van.
  • Pitstop in Liechtenstein (while I am not sure there is anything to really see there, I've had a weird obsession with the country since I was little so would like to a quick stop.) Any lunch bites that would be recommended?
  • Anything scenic in the fussen area to stop and walk around? -Any viewpoints to be aware of?

Also, any special tolls we need to be aware of when crossing country borders?

Note: We are doing castles the following day so don't need to fit them in here!

First question: where are you renting the the van and where are you turning it in? That will answer the toll question.

Coming from Liechtenstein Stop on Lake Constance either Bregenz or Lindau and go on to Füssen from there

Nice walk near Füssen on the way from Lake Constance to Füssen is the Castle walk to the ruins of Hohenfreyberg Castle and Eisenberg Castle near the Schlossbergalm at Eisenberg-Zell
After doing the short 15 min walk(oneway) from Schlossbergalm to the Castle Ruins go to the Local Brewery and Pub in Eisenberg-Speiden for lunch and a pint there is also a nice Church and a wood carving shop as well as a Hotel in the Village

Eisenberg is 10km/15min west of Füssen so you will pass through on local roads coming from Lake Constance
Its not the direct way but scenic. Insert Eisenberg-Zell in the Navi/GPS

In Füssen hike up the Kalvarienberg for the views of Füssen and the two castles in the distance. I always enjoy a quiet walk around the Schwansee. With time you can combine both and return to Füssen on the main roads or bus.

Sam - Car rental starts in Zurich and ends in Munich. Not ideal but given young children + elderly parents convenience for them outweighed cost other options!

your Swiss car won't have the Umweltplakette to drive in central Munich so you need to stop in the suburbs - and driving in Munich is a royal pain anyway.

Where in Munich do you hope to turn the car in? After use in Munich or before?

Your Swiss car will have its Swiss Vignette.

Do you intend to do motorway driving in Austria - you'll need an Austrian Vignette.

If you just go around Bregenz at the edge of the Bodensee that tiny stretch is exempt.

You're aware that dropping a Swiss car in Munich will come with a huge cost? Between CHF 500 and CHF 1000?
