Road Trip Munich to Berlin

Hi,
I’m planning to travel at the end of September from Munich to Berlin by car. I want to stop by nice towns for coffee, lunch, sightseeing and spend one night before arriving to Berlin. I have read possible towns might be Regensburg, Nuremberg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bamber, Leipzig, Meissen, Dresden, but don’t know which towns to choose. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your comments.

I think I would look on a map and pick out a town or city that was at the half-way mark. Maybe Erfurt, Leipzig or Weimar.

I think it entirely depends on your interests. With two day on the road you have many possibilities... one bigger city, two smaller ones, maybe even three sites. To help you decide:

World Heritage Sites in Germany
Highlights of Germany according to Baedeker

Some ideas:

Museums: Dresden
Nazis: Nuremberg + KZ Kuchenwald (near Weimar)
Castles: Coburg and Wartburg castle (spend the night in the hotel next to the Wartburg)
Culture: Bayreuth (Wagner) and/or Weimar (Goethe, Schiller, Liszt, Nietzsche, Bauhaus) and/or Leipzig (Bach, Mendelson-Bartholdy)
Cathedrals and towns: Bamberg and Naumburg
Protestant Reformation: Wartburg + Wittenberg
Just beautiful old towns: Bamberg and/or Erfurt and/or Weimar

Or mix these places.

hey jdavidrat ---
good choice to travel. I just came back 2 months ago from Munich/Berlin trip.

It's all beautiful for -- but to me - Regensburg was very beautiful, full of a tremendous amount of history, which manages to be a living city, not an outdoor museum. Not a big place, but big enough to have some culture, find food choices, coffee, desserts etc. Moderate amount of outdoor activities surround it as well --especially if you like activities on the Danube (a lovely, wide, slow moving river). Mind-blowing!

Thanks all for your replies!
I'll keep reading to which cities I'll stop by, because I don't think I'll have time to stop on all of them.

You have some good choices...Meissen, Dresden, Leipzig. I've not been to Bamberg. I would not even consider Rothenburg, certainly not in the same league as your other worthy and important choices.

Meissen is very interesting, the "cradle of Saxony," did two day trips there.

How much are you willing to deviate? Then I would also suggest Weimar, Naumburg an der Saale, Halle, Jena.

Hi,

In that case you have some places well recommended as listed above...Quedlinburg, Meissen, etc, unless you have specific sights targeted in the town/city,,,say the famous church in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, or the houses/museums of Bach, Mendelsohn, Schumann in Leipzig, or the battlefield memorial monument by the Allies against Napoleon in 1813, ie, the Völkerschlachtdenkmal on the battle of Leipzig. or Meissen,...bottom line, you have numerous choices. these choices are all logistically doable in reaching Berlin within 2-3 hours.
