River Moselle is expected to remain closed for shipping traffic until the end of March 2025

The Mosel-Saar-Lahn Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA) announced that ships will probably not be able to sail on the Moselle again until spring. This is because both gate wings of the lock were completely torn from their anchoring and deformed in the accident on Sunday afternoon.

Continuous shipping traffic is currently not possible on the Moselle as there is only this lock chamber for large ships at the Müden barrage. Around 70 ships are stuck on the Moselle and cannot leave the river in the direction of the Rhine. They are reportedly jammed all the way back to the French border and the Saar.

This is going to seriously impact the tourist industry in that region. First, the tour boats won't get clearance to run until the commercial traffic is moved, so it may be late April before that happens. Second, that's going to push tourists to trains and cars, and there's not enough infrastructure to make up the difference. Look for added tourist traffic on the Rhine come spring.

Is there a possibility that riverboat cruises on the Mosel will turn into bus trips?

Saw that on the news yesterday. Wondering if any river cruises got stuck along there doing Xmas market cruises?
Going to have to be bus tours if your river cruise was supposed to be on the Mosel, I think.

If repairs can be pulled off as planned - by the end of March - there may not be much impact on river cruises or general tourism. Easter is April 20. Day cruise operations don't typically begin until mid-late April. Before that, off-season visitors to Trier, Saarburg etc. wouldn't be arriving by boat anyway.

I believe "end of March" on April 1 when every repair is finally finished and the first ship was going through successfully. There is winter in between and so on.

Good luck for the engineers and the affected companies and people.

"We have calculated four months if everything goes well and, above all, we don't get any significant flooding."

Update:
After the accident at the lock in Müden, the first ships were able to sail down the Moselle towards the Rhine by a temporary fallback lock. The responsible persons at the Mosel-Saar-Lahn Waterways and Shipping Authority want to have all locked ships back in operations by New Year's Eve.

This does not mean that the lock is finally repaired.

More details.
