Rhine Valley sites that aren't in Rick Steves

Two friends and I will be in Kaub for a week in September. I've been to Germany 20+ times and speak German. One friend has been in the Rhine Valley with me several times. It is the first visit for the third. I've visited the usual RS places several times and will enjoy going back. But I hope to find something different for me. We have a car (and 2 designated drivers on any given day, we are there for the Reisling & Gewurztraimer, after all ;). A couple of interesting smaller towns in the same day would work or a nice walk in the woods.

Any ideas - Tschüß

My older copy of GAS describes only Bacharach and St. Goar and dismisses or ignores most of the other towns. Surely you have already been to some of the other places. It would help if you could name the places you have been and seen. Tell us as well how far north/south you are interested in traveling from the Kaub base - and of any interests you might have beyond walking and wine. With a week you ought to have at least a little time for the Mosel as well or perhaps one of the other tributaries.

As for your walks... Kaub is on the Rheinsteig Trail; the Rheinburgenweg across the river between St. Goar and Oberwesel is excellent and continues both north and south of this segment.

Please visit Eltville. Charming, cute, lots of lovely old half-timbered buildings, ancient church, a dry moat filled with flowers, promenade walk along the Rhein and plenty of wine from the Rheingau. Take the bus from the Eltville train station up to Eberbach monastery, where they make some of the best wines in this region. There are trails up there you can walk too.
Assmanshausen might be worth a visit or Oestrich Winkel, or Lorch. All of these are on the right hand side of the Rhein.
