Rhine Valley - Restaurant/Activity Reservations Needed?

Hello Travel Community,

My husband and I are travelling to Germany in September, spending five days in Hamburg staying with friends and five days in the Rhine Valley, staying in St. Goar. We have some activities planned for the Rhine, not a set itinerary, and we will have a car. My question is:

Are there any activities or restaurants in the Rhine Valley that we would need to book well in advance? We are very into food and enjoy trying local cuisine, so if there are any restaurants we should plan/reserve in advance we'd want to know that and would love any recommendations. We are also planning to check out Rhine en Flamen in Oberwesel while we are there.

Food, nature, art, history are our main interests but we are up for any memorable adventures and activities. I just want to make sure we don't miss the boat on anything (including boats!) while also allowing some flexibility for a relaxed vacation.

We'd love recommendations for relatively easy but pretty hikes in the area as well.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I really like Eltville the most and it is easy to also visit Eberbach Monastery. They have some great restaurants in this town, like the Gelbe Haus. If you want to do any wine tasting though, leave the car and take the train. A fun place to go is Rhein Wein Welt in Rüdesheim. For 12€, you get to taste 10 different wines from the Rheingau, and they have about 120 to choose from. The food here is really good too.

In Bacharach eat at Cafe Bistro Noy.. Armenian food in addition to German. My wild boar bratwurst were excellent as was my wife’s wild boar goulash. I’ve never made a reservation to eat in Bacharach, but they do take reservations ( according to their website )

For a castle ruin where you will probably be the only ones, Burg Stahlberg, just a short way from the Rhine above the Bacharach suburb of Steeg

Ideas for you within a small radius of St Goar...

EASY HIKE #1: From ST. GOAR you will be just 5 train minutes from the town of OBERWESEL, a prominent wine town with a scenic in-town hiking trail (rated easy) that takes you along the remnants of Oberwesel's old town wall and towers. I believe we spent roughly an hour for this walk. Some resources for you:

While in Oberwesel you might want to stop in at the handsome cathedral there:

EASY HIKE #2: The Günderodehaus is a top stop on this trail.

I've been to the G'haus a couple times. (Never eaten there, just had a drink on the patio and enjoyed the view.) It's very close to Oberwesel - just to the south - and I walked up from town using the "Weinlehrpfad" trail at the end of town. It's a short but steep climb. I have also walked from St Goar along the Rhine Castle trail to the G-haus, but that's a tougher hike too. SO... here's a hike that I have not done from start to finish but which includes the G-Haus as well as some of the SCULPTURE PARK artwork on the Rhine Castle trail... the Heinrich Demel trail:

The sculptures were a huge surprise to me. Really interesting to find these things in remote spots up on those cliffs.

The good thing about this trail for you is that there's a bus from St Goar that takes you directly to the Günderodehaus on the clifftops in roughly 20 minutes. (If you already happen to be in Oberwesel, buses take you to the G-haus in 8 minutes.) Once up there, you can had out on the Heinrich Demel trail, walk as much as you like and not have to worry about the big climb from the bottom of the river gorge. You can use the DB Railway site to find bus journeys - Just use "Guenderodehaus" as your destination.

ZUM LAMM, OBERWESEL: It was long ago but I remeember having a good traditional meal here. Didn't make reservations, don't know if you need them:

ALLA FONTANA, St Goar: Good Italian place IME.

(I have a very casual approach to eating in Germany... nothing disappoints me, so dining rec's are mostly outside my wheelhouse.)

Another vote for Eltville and Kloster Eberbach (hourly bus #172 to the latter from train station Eltville). The monastery has a vinothek where you can taste all their wines and buy them.

Eberbach also does some cool wine tastings by candle light in their ancient wine cellars. The restaurant there is supposed to be quite good too. I just love the Basilica and the whole place is so beautiful.
On your way there, you can stop in Kiedrich and see St. Valentines' church.

I would definitely recommend Restaurant Zur Krone in St. Goar but don't think you'd need to book in advance.
