Rhine River trains

Hi. We will be staying in St. Goar for 2 nights. We will be taking a river cruise but would like to know which direction from St.Goar will give us the best scenery and how far should we go? I assume that we wouldhop ona train then to go back to our hotel?? Also if we are taking a train to Strasbourg France, what is the closest station to St. Goar that will give us themost direct and fastest route to Strasbourg?

From St. Goar, you'd normally take the train FIRST to Bingen - Board there and cruise back. That's the best part. That cruise takes 1.5 hours. St. Goar - Bingen by train takes 25 minutes. See this map of the cruise area. You would then board a train in St. Goar to travel to Strasbourg.

You can use the sightseeing cruise as a form of transportation instead if you wish to proceed directly afterward to Strasbourg... just cruise from St. Goar to Bingen (south, in the opposite direction.) Take your bags on board with you. That cruise shows you the same great scenery of course but it takes 2 hrs. 40 minutes (because it bucks the strong current.) From there, walk to one of Bingen's stations with your bags (10-20 minutes and board your train.)

Note that if you take the train first that day, you'll get a 20% discount on the cruise at the Bingen dock - just show the ticket you used to reach Bingen. If you board in St. Goar, that discount isn't available (but there may be other discounts depending on your age...)

Not sure I understand your question. Trains are not airplanes. There is a station in St. Goar and the fastest, most direct route to Strasbourg will start there. Use the Bahn schedule website to find connects.

I see a 4h04m, 3 change connnection at 11:00 going first to Koblenz to catch an EC, but I also see a 4h08m, 3 change connection at 9:56 going via Mainz and Mannheim. All fast routes go from Offenburg, Germany, to Strasbourg. The connection through Koblenz is 10€ per person more because it is not as direct.

Right now I don't see any advance purchase Savings Fare tickets online for a route all the way to Strasbourg. You might have to get a ticket only as far as Kehl (just over the Rhein from Strasbourg) for 29€/person and buy a separate ticket from Kehl to Strasbourg for 4,10€/pers.

Thank you for your help! That clears up the river cruise and is helpful to know we would take the train one way. Good tip on the discount info also. I wasn't sure if we could get on a train in St. Goar and get to Strasbourg, butfrom what you have said, we can with some changes. One more question: would we need to get reservations in advance for Strasbourg or just buy tickets that day?
