Rhine restaurant recommendations please

Hello wise travelers-getting ready for our trip and I thought I'd just ask around to get some recommendations for places to eat in and around Bacharach, St Goar, Oberwesel and Boppard. Open to any cuisine, not just German food. More casual places preferably. Also wondering if there a place in Bacharach to buy food to make a picnic if we go hiking/biking? Thanks!

I could tell you where I ate, but that doesn't mean it's the only place, and no one gave me a recommendation. I just go up and down the street looking at the posted menu and find a place that has something that looks good at a price I like.

Last October we stayed at Hotel am Markt in St. Goar for two nights and ate dinner both times in the hotel, because it was convenient. The food was fine.

We also had lunch one day at an outside cafe on Herrstrasse. Also fine.

In 2004 I stayed in Boppard and ate several times at the restaurants on the Marktpl. in Boppard. They were also good.

You're making too much of this. Someone will recommend a place they really like, because it was the first place they saw, when just down the street is a better place.

Google Maps shows one market in Bacharach, a REWE called Tomi's Supermarket a couple of blocks north of the main intersection (Blücherstr. and Oberstr.) in Bacharach.

When I was in those towns I mostly just ate on the go, not at restaurants. But when I stayed at Hotel Kranenturm in Bacharach I did have dinner in their restaurant and it was very good.

Cafe Rusticana in Bacharach. Good food, friendly English speaking hostess, good prices. We've eaten there 5 times in our last two trips! The wife loves the Apple strudel

I really enjoyed the outdoor terrace dining room up at Burg Rheinfels. The scenery is lovely, gazing down at the Rhein.
Going the other direction, all the way to Eltville, the Gelbe Haus is a favorite and have been there many times. Again, the view is wonderful, just not very high. More of a peaceful, serene view of the Rhein, no trains, castle tower, lots of birds.

We have eaten at a couple restaurants already mentioned: Hotel am Markt in St. Goar and the Cape Rusticana in Bacharach. We liked both and the Alte Schmied on the main square in Boppard, plus the Alte Münze in Bacharach. In general we do as Lee does: we just walk around the look at menus. You can get poor food, beer and wine in Germany but it is rare in our experience.

Thanks all! I just wanted to make sure we didn’t somehow miss the best restaurant on the Rhine (lol). I’m sure we’ll mostly just wander until we see something that looks appealing so it’s nice to know there’s good food all around. Hopefully the weather will permit some outdoor dining!

Outdoor dining: Several modest places line Heerstraße, the pedestrians-only main street through St. Goar:

Alla Fontana is on Pumpengasse, a sidestreet off Heerstraße - good Italian food with a small terrace out front.

Burg Rheinfels does not have an outdoor terrace dining area or a dining room. I think Jo may have been referring to the hotel next door, the Hotel Schloss Rheinfels - a very nice terrace there: http://sr47.de/t/pics/56e71e44de.jpg

I think I have eaten at every restaurant in St. Goar at some time or another. Personally, I found them all a bit on the just ok side. Not great, not bad, decent food but nothing to write home about. I think I would pick a different town, perhaps Bacharach.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the feedback and suggestions. We will also use Trip Advisor, and google, to help us pick places to eat. I just like to get all the information possible! :)
