Rhine/Munich Recommendations

Looking for recommendations for southern Germany itinerary in a few weeks. We're flying into Frankfurt and out of Munich, traveling via train between the cities.

3 nights along the Rhine, staying in Boppard
1. We plan to take train/boat to explore towns along the Rhine (Bacharach, St. Goar, Rudesheim, etc.) - any can't-miss sights? Any favorite castles?
2. Is it possible to visit wineries along the Rhine and do tastings (similar to Napa)?

4 nights in Munich
1. We plan to take the train to Salzburg for the day, but I'm also thinking about another day trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen/Zugspitze. Too much?
2. Any Munich recommendations? So far, we're planning on visiting the Nazi history museum, and obviously beer gardens.

1.) To cruise on a day starting from Boppard: Train to Bingen, cruise back north to St. Goar (this is the most scenic stretch of river,) then after the cruise sightsee in St. Goar and train back to Boppard at your leisure (only 10 minutes north of St. Goar.)

  • To fit in Bacharach on this day, get off the train there on your train ride to Bingen. Trains run frequently - every hour or better. Continue by train to Bingen after that. If you can reach Bingen by around 2 pm, you'll be able to board the 14:30 boat to St. Goar (arrive there 16:00.)

  • Hopping off and back on the boat makes sightseeing problematic because the boat schedule is irregular and skimpy.

  • Favorite castle: Marksburg... intact medieval castle, never destroyed, in Braubach (opposite river bank from Boppard.) English tours at 1 and 4 pm. Braubach is easy to reach. Steep walk up to the castle from the train station in 25-30 minutes.

  • Boppard chairlift: https://www.boppard-tourismus.de/en/leisure-activities/chair-lift/ Have a beer up there at Gedeonseck Terrace:

2) Wineries have venues in town. There are no tasting rooms out in the vineyards, just vines and grapes.

Nice Weingarten near Boppard station:

4 nights in Munich really equals 3 days. You can choose to spend two of those days on day trips, but that just leaves you with one day in Munich.

If you are interested in Nazi/World War II history then you might want to consider a visit to the Dachau Memorial. It is easy to access by taking the S2 line from the central train station and transferring to a local bus that runs frequently.
I like the Nymphenburg Palace Complex in Munich. This a 10 minute tram ride from train station followed by a 10 minute walk. There are several walking tours available that provide a 2-3 hour walking tour of Munich that are quite interesting.

I really enjoy Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Zugspitze, the gorge, and the nearby lakes. I do worry that you are stretching yourself a bit thin in the amount of time that you have.

Also, Have you considered the "D" or Deutschland ticket? If all your travel is in the same calendar month and you are taking a lot of regional transportation, it could save you some money.

My favorite town on the Rhein is Eltville, combined with a visit to Eberbach Monastery. They offer tastings there from their extensive cellars.
A stop in Rüdesheim is fun, and include a visit to RheinWeinWelt, where you can do tastings in the old Asbach factory.
