Rhine first week of April?

I just posted a long winded explanation but it is now gone.
If it resurfaces I will delete one!

We are traveling from Cologne and have 3 Nights Free before we go to Krakow. Is the middle Rhine "open" the first week of April? We were going to stay in Boppard for 3 nights and explore (without a car) then fly out of Frankfurt to Krakow.

My husband is wondering if we would be better off taking the train to Munich for 3 nights and then fly to Krakow..... I would prefer smaller towns but worry things may be closed. And it is closer and flights are cheaper out of Frankfurt. OR is there somehwere else I am missing in Germany? ( We are ending our trip in Berlin)

KD started boat service in the middle Rhine on April 1 this year, so I expect they will start again about the same time next year.

Everything opens up at Easter, which is 31 March this year. You will find the towns on the Rhein, and the ships up and running. It should be very pretty if this year is like last year.

It's a tough call, I think. Early April can be cold. I've run into snow then myself. And while "things" are open, most of those Rhine things involve time outdoors... those cruises can be numbingly cold. The chairlift rides, the town-wall walks, hiking/biking, Rheinfels Castle (a largely outdoor experience since it's a set of ruins... these and others will be impacted if the weather isn't right. And there's really not much indoor excitement in Boppard. So I think a better Rhine strategy might be to play it by ear... and yes, there's much you will not see in Germany, and some good stuff nearby... Try this...

Day 1: Travel to Mainz for a 3-night stay. But travel on a flexible ticket (day pass for example) and make a stopover somewhere on the way that interests you. Take a cruise or do the hike to Marksburg if the weather is inviting, and if not, pick something indoors instead, either in Mainz (which has several good museums and similar) or elsewhere.

Days 2&3: Good weather? You're about 30 train minutes from Bingen for your Rhine cruise, a little further from St. Goar, Bacharach, Oberwesel, and Boppard, all of which are served by train. Rüdesheim across the river from Bingen isn't far either. Not so good? Mainz may have more for you. Or take the train south to SPEYER, which is surprisingly full of interesting things to see/do. Day passes like the Rheinland-Pfalz ticket make these outings simple and cheap.

From Mainz you'll be just 25 minutes from the FRA terminal by direct train.

Sounds like a good option.... I had Mainz down first as a homebase!
So you think sticking with the Middle / Upper Rhine may still be a better bet than Munich or somewhere else? This is the one part of our long trip that I am really stuck on! The rest has all fallen into place beautifully!

I would prefer smaller towns...

Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, and Frankfurt, in that order, are Germany's most populous cities. So having already spent time in Cologne - and ending your trip in Berlin - and with your stated preference for smaller places, why would you want to make the long trip to Munich, specifically? Not that Munich is a worthless place. But a plan that combines the old-world Rhine towns (with tiny populations) + Mainz (which I'm sure doesn't make the top 25) + Speyer (much smaller than Mainz) offers something for everybody and should not disappoint.

Start travelling from Cologne the Middle Rhine might be the better option for its less time to go there
(its also on the way to Frankfurt Airport)

Spent 3 nights in Boppard and do river cruise and daytrip from there

But if want to see Munich its a almost 5hrs train journey from Cologne Airport to Munich
So you spent a full day travelling by train.Better fly to Munich then stay 3 nights see city and sourounding area and then to Krakow

3 night give you full day to explore Munich city and another full day to go to a smaller town near Munich
So you get both

I can recommend daytours from Munich

to Tegernsee

or Chiemsee

Train connections from Munich 1hr
