Rhine Day Cruise

We are staying in Boppard. We want to do a day cruise from Bingen to Boppard. I have some of this sorted and know there is only one boat per day that goes that complete route, leaving Bingen at 16:30 and arriving in Boppard at 18:50.
So my thoughts are we take the train from Boppard to Bingen BUT it seems like there are many suggestions on other posts that St. Goar is also worth seeing...so what is my best way?
I believe we get a train pass from our accommodation in Boppard for free trains within that region - but that does not go all the way to Bingen. Does it include St. Goar?
Would it make sense to take a train to St. Goar, spend a couple of hours there (what should we do there?) and then continue on by train to Bingen?
Thanks.

St. Goar's Rheinfels Castle is the main draw there. The river scenery there is great too. The VRM Guest Ticket, which comes free of charge with a stay in Boppard, includes transport to St. Goar as well as Oberwesel to the south (which has a very nice and easy old-town-wall walk with nice views.) Bacharach, just south of Oberwesel, has nice old-world buildings too.

So your idea of hopping off the train from Boppard to Bingen in one or more towns is a very good one.

You will need an extra train ticket to cover Oberwesel>(Bacharach stopover)> Bingen(Rhein) Stadt since that rail segment is not covered by the Guest ticket. You can buy it at Boppard station at a ticket machine before boarding. That ticket is €7.40 each. Keep the ticket and show it at the KD dock to get a discount of €7.20 each on your cruise fare (20% discount.) So basically, this O-wesel > Bingen train trip is free too!
