We will be leaving Munich the morning of Nov. 24, and need to be in Duisburg by late morning Nov. 30. We'd like to see some of the Rhein Valley (Marksburg) and these cities........
Reigensburg
Nuremburg
Bamburg
Rothenburg
Bacharach/Rudenshein
Where would you stop/visit/stay and what would be your route? We will be traveling by train
I think you still need to edit the list due to time factors. Your other post indicated that Rothenburg was a must for the kids. Here is how I would do it.
Thursday Nov 24: Get a Bayern ticket and a train to Regensburg after 9 am. Check luggage in a station locker and tour Regensburg. When you've had enough, retrieve the bags and get a train to Nuremberg. Get a hotel there for 2 nights.
Friday Nov 25: Tour Nuremberg morning. Take a train to Bamberg in the after noon and tour there, returning when you've seen enough. You can cover the whole day with an 18.70 EUR VGN Tages Ticket Plus.
Saturday Nov 26: Tour Nuremberg morning. Check out of the hotel and get a train to Rothenburg. Use a VGN ticket for that. Get hotel in Rothenburg for 2 nights.
Sunday Nov 27: Tour Rothenburg.
Monday Nov 28: Check out and take a train to Bacharach (or another town) and get a hotel for 2 nights.
Tuesday Nov 29: Tour Rhine valley by train, including Marksburg Castle.
Wednesday Nov 30: Morning train to Duisburg.
I agree with Sam's plan of attack for the most part but as he indicated you don't have enough time in spots... Nuremberg mostly.
2 nights in Rothenburg: just not necessary if you leave Nuremberg early on the day you go there. 1 night is fine (11/27.) 3 nights in Nuremberg (24th - 26th) will allow you a full day in Bamberg if you wish and a full day in Nuremberg. You still take the train on 11/28 to the Rhine.
I would absolutely book in Ruedesheim for 2 nights (11/28-29)if possible, the only small Rhine town where it will be fun and lively at that time. The "Weihnachtsmarkt der Nationen" will be underway, and this Christmas market is a truly wonderful one. Bacharach and the other Rhine towns will be mostly shuttered. And if you stay in Ruedesheim you can take a direct train to Braubach for Marksburg Castle (from Bacharach the trip or the other towns on the west bank, the trip is more complicated.)
You can use this day pass for the train outing along the Rhine: http://www.vrminfo.de/en/tickets-and-fares/ticket-offers/rheinland-pfalz-ticket/ Note that it's also valid on the the FERRY in St. Goarshausen to cross the river and see the old-world towns of St. Goar, Oberwesel, or Bacharach (all nicely clustered together, only 5 minutes from each other by train.)
You may have some trouble looking at train schedules if you keep misspelling the town names... some end in -erg, others in -urg as they are pronounced differently in German.
Regensburg
Nuremberg
Bamberg
Ruedesheim (no "n's" at all) or Rüdesheim using German spelling conventions.
Rothenburg is spelled right but you need to narrow your train search down as it's not the only Rothenburg in Germany - "Rothenburg ob der Tauber" is the right one.
Sam and Russ.....thanks for the great info. As stated, we don't really expect to do all, just need a bit of help to narrow it down to the best of the list. I was getting a bit overwhelmed trying to figure it out.
Russ, I apologize for the name spellings, typed it in a hurry. I understand about the English/German spellings.
Thanks again, April Moers/Mörs
