Restaurants in Munich

We are travelling to Munich in September and have some restaurants we are booking to enjoy German food, but we are also looking for an Italian restaurant for one dinner. Can anyone recommend a place good for a group of 8 adults, cozy as opposed to contemporary? I was looking at Vi Vadi Rustico, and Ca D'Oro. Any thoughts? Thank you!

Though I cannot remember the exact name, I ate at a great German eatery behind the famed Frauenkirche, the biggest cathedral in Munich. The one I ate at had a ton of space. The church is located on a square with a lot of space on all sides. There are a lot of eateries on either side of the church and behind it. The eateries by the Frauenkirche are all probably good because they're near a famous church. Sorry I cannot be more specific about the name.

You can go to any Bavarian restaurant in the city center, and it will be big enough and definitely not contemporary. I hardly ever go out for Bavarian food, but when I do, I love to go to 'Glöckl am Dom' (be sure to make a reservation). They still maintain the old Munich tradition of the 'Stehausschank'. To the left of the main entrance, in a small courtyard, you go through the door and buy your first beer and drink it while standing. 'Stehausschank' literally means 'stand-up bar'. Later you can go to your reservation and enjoy your meal. I don't drink alcohol (and the Stehausschank only serves delicious Augustiner beer - Munich's best), but I like to stand there and chat for a while with the group I'm with before dinner.

The Italian restaurants you've chosen are near the main train station, and for that reason alone, I wouldn't visit them. It's not an area where you'd want to spend an evening. Just pick the Tripadvisor recommendations and cross out the ones near the main train station. Specifically choose a neighborhood that's not the old town, because then you'll see something of Munich that others don't. Public transportation will take you anywhere easily. There are many excellent Italian restaurants in Munich in all price ranges - from inexpensive pizzerias to (now former) two-star restaurant.

Ah, Munich, husband and mine's most favorite city in the world. A decade ago we stopped counting the number of times we've been there, at that point it total 38 trips.

Our two do not miss favorite Italian restaurants in town, both offering up an atmosphere you're looking for:

• Trattoria Pizzeria Lago di Garda
Baaderstrasse 2, (near Deutsches Museum)

S/U-Bahn Isartor

No website, but you can find it on Google maps and at

We've been dining at Lago di Garda for at least 15 years and it just keeps getting better and better. During our most recent visit we dined here twice. It’s that good. Don’t miss it. Authentic Italian restaurant with a nice casual atmosphere and lovely hosts Marco and Giulio Molta. Outstanding pizza along with an extensive and excellent menu. Drop Marco an email to make reservations at either [email protected] or [email protected].

• Vino e Gusto

Herrnstrasse 52 in the building at Hochbrückenstrasse 14

Another must do. Outstanding authentic Italian food, great libations, friendly and comfortable casual atmosphere with indoor and outdoor dining. Owner Guido Prick is wonderful, lively and entertaining. And his two bulldogs are fantastic. So very much fun. During our most recent trip to Munich we had dinner there three times and drinks 5 times. Herrnstrasse 52. Very near Mandarin Oriental and Maximillian Munich, in Old Town.
