What kind of restaurants, for which meal, and at what price point?

Regensburg: Kneitinger; Bischofshof. If you don't mind a 20 min walk: Auerbräu. Just google.

Nürnberg: Steichele (Knorrstrasse 2); Baumwolle (Adlerstrasse); Heilig Geist (on and in the river Pegnitz); Goldenes Posthorn (Sebalder Platz, opposite the St. sebald church); several similar around Tiergärtnertorplatz below the castle. Avoid tourist traps like the beer halls along Königstrasse and restaurants the names of which begin with "Bratwurst..." (you will find excellent Bratwurst elsewhere). There is, however, an excellent Indian restaurant at the beginning of the Königstrasse opposite the station.

Munich

For traditional Bavarian fare:

  • Haidhauser Augustiner - typical neighborhood restaurant/pub, plus the best beer in Munich.
  • Cafe Voilá - good restaurant for modern German fare, excellent breakfast!
  • Paulaner am Nockherberg - in additional to being one of the most beautiful Biergartens in Munich, the restaurant has high quality traditional food. I always get the duck.
  • Gaststätte Zum Kloster - just getting here is an adventure in itself as the restaurant is tucked right in the center of Haidhausen on a very charming pedestrian street. Eclectic handwritten menu that changes often

Non-German fare:

  • Paros - Good Greek food. Can get a little rowdy on Monday nights (all you can drink retsina night). Wednesday nights is fish night and requires reservations.
  • Vinaiolo - Very high quality Italian food, also very expensive but worth it. Good date night option.

Hi sommerfld- Just a suggestion. Go to Trip Advisor and search for Restaurants in each town of interest. The nice part of this site is the map that shows the location of the restaurants you select. That allows you to rule out locations that are hard to get to or that are too far from your hotel to consider.

Have a good trip!!!

We are looking for all kinds of restaurants - maybe not soooo expensive, but recommendations from these forums have been better than Trip Advisor. Not sure why, but this is where we've learned about some off the beaten track. Thanks everyone!

Regensburg: We like the Kneitinger's near Arnulf Platz - there are 4 or 5. We also like Pam Pam Pizzeria for a change from German food. Regensburger Weissbräuhaus for good German food but sometimes busy.

Munich: We have had a couple good meals at Paulaner im Tal. I also like the Augustiner Restaurant on Kaufingerstr.

Nürnberg: I will second the Goldenes Posthorn. My wife's favorite bratwurst stand is on Karolinenstraße near the Deutsches Bank.

To add to the Regensburg suggestions for Italian, Da Tino Haidplatz Regensburg. Of course there is the famous Wurstkuchl by the old bridge for a Bratwurst Kipferl.

If you like sausage and sauerkraut, in Regensburg try Wurstkuchl. Supposedly the oldest restaurant in Germany. It only accepts cash.
In Nurnberg, we enjoyed Nassauerkeller. Watch you footing. When you enter the door there is an immediate steep set of steps.
In Rothenburg the restaurant at Hotel Burg Gartenpalais had good food.

We'll be in Munich this time next week (YEA!), so I'll report back if we find one that is particularly outstanding.
