Restaurant recommendations for Munich

Hello fellow travelers. My husband and I will be visiting Germany at the end of this month. We would love to have some restaurant recommendations for local cuisine in Munich and Nurnberg. Thank you in advance

Hello, Soniacg!
You might check out the link below to another reply of mine. It includes some good food and beverage recommendations in Munich.

That said, I highly recommend that you try one of the following locations for some excellent, traditional food: Andechser am Dom (one of the few places in town that you can get the exquisite, awesome beer brewed by the monks at Kloster Andechs), Altes Hackerhaus (for the pork knuckle, which is amazingly crispy on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth on the inside), and Hofbräu Keller (not Hofbräuhaus). It is also fun to stroll around the Viktualienmarkt in the morning or around lunchtime and forage for your own food. Another fun option is to go someplace for the traditional Weißwurst (try to do this before noon). My family and I have enjoyed getting Weißwurst at Der Pschorr, just off the Viktualienmarkt- a tad pricey, maybe but nice place. Ask to have their fantastic “Edelhell” beer. It is often freshly tapped throughout the day. You’ll know it, because the bartender will ring a bell when they tap a new keg.

In Nürnberg, I heartily recommend Hausbrauerei Altstadthof: one of the coziest places I have ever been. It is very small. In nice weather, they may have some extra tables outside. They also brew their own beer and distill their own spirits. You should try both. I would go back there in a heartbeat to have some more of their fabulous Rotbier, excellent soup, and hearty breads.

For breakfast, if you don’t get it at your hotel, or for a nice lunch, try the Literaturhaus near the Handwerkhof. Nice atmosphere, simple and clean, good food, and a very friendly staff.

I’m jealous. Have a ball!

In Munich, most of the beerhalls have similar menus and quality. The only issues I have had is if the place is crazy busy, quality suffers. Realize that many German dishes are hearty slow cooked things, so most are prepared well ahead and heated as needed, sometimes with care, sometimes just to move the plates. But, the beer halls can be great fun, and the beer gardens are good for a lunch or lighter meal.

I do have one restaurant that I keep going back to, that is Zum Alten Markt https://www.zumaltenmarkt.de/ It is a smaller place, near the Viktualmarkt. They focus on seasonal menus, German classics, but with a bit of a modern twist. It is not cheap, but not expensive. You can look at their menu, use Googe translate, makes my mouth water every time. Note that their menu changes frequently, so do not get your heart set on any item. Reservations recommended, I usually stop by during the day for an evening reservation.

I'll ditto Paul's recommendation for Zum Alten Markt. Very, very good. Augustiner Klosterwirt was also very enjoyable, though more pedestrian.

In Munich I would suggest relative to local cuisine the Biergarten 9 in Viktualienmarkt, always very crowded, huge place, went there for lunch in 2023, good food at decent prices.

I paid cash as no credit cards are accepted. (based on the info then). The sign says so, regardless, I would have paid cash anyway.

In Munich try Schneider's, across from McDonalds, just past the Marienplatz; it's an old student hangout. In the victualmarkt I rarely sit to eat, but if you buy what you want and take it with you you can find a quiet spot in a park, or along the river, and eat in peace. I also prefer the Augustiner Brauhaus by the hunting and Fishing museum as it may not be "tradtional" looking, but the food is good and the prices are better than tourist places.

If you go up by the museum district, which is also the University district (more or less) look for the StuLounge, StuCafe, StuBistro's; these are student places and priced accordingly. There's also a good beer garden by the Kunst Pavilion; just look for the Neptune statue.

In Nuremberg one of my favorite places is the small winestube at the Trodelmarkt bridge. I've been going there of decades. I also like the Restaurant Burgwächter, which is at the foot of the castle, although this is another sentimental favorite. Mostly I just wander the town, I've spent many, many days there, and during the day I hit the Imbiss for walking around food.
