When we were there a couple of years at that time. Most of Munich begins shutting down around 3 pm on Christmas eve. We kind of surprised how quickly the Christmas market disappeared. Fortunately we were staying in an apartment so we did some last minutes shopping for our evening and Christmas day dinner. On the way back to our apartment around 6pm, it was dark and we saw only one restaurant in the area open. We were staying near the train station. On Christmas Day only the beer halls were open and packed. We spent most of the afternoon in one of the beer halls. Huge family from great grandmother to six day old infants were there. Again did not see any restaurants open on the walk to and from the beer hall. Nothing was open.

Do you know, do you need a reservation for the beer halls or can you just walk in?

Make dinner reservations on the 24th at a restaurant in a 5* hotel. Those are a sure bet as businesses in Germany shut down on Xmas eve around 14:00. Many restaurants are closed for the whole day on the 24th so that their employees can enjoy the holiday. On the 25th, they do a booming business, so it won't be tough to find a place to eat, though a reservation might be a good thing to have.
