Reserve tickets or no

Hello everyone,
I will be in Fussen for five days this July, I have no real agenda. I have been to Fussen before, back in July 2007. I did not reserve tickets to Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein. I arrived 15 minuets before it opened and back then there was barely a handful of people waiting to buy tickets like myself. This time I really do not want to commit to a set schedule since I am taking my five year old daughter along with my wife and niece. I was unsure if I should make a reservation or just go early like last time. I was wondering if anyone has been there early in the morning recently before the day trippers arrive? If so was it as easy to get tickets as it was for me in the past? I believe the day trippers do not arrive until after 9 or 10 but I been reading many posts where people are saying that reservations are a must to avoid the long lines. Should I take the chance without reservations since I plan on going early when the castles first open? Or have things changed since I went last and I need to reserve tickets? I thank you for your advice.

Take my one experience visiting in July with a grain of salt. I was staying in Garmisch-Partenkirchen with friends who were visiting from the US (I lived in Germany at the time). Like most visitors to Germany, a trip to Neuschwanstein was high on their wish list. We arrived in Füssen slightly before 10 in the morning. There was a line, but they got their tickets within a few minutes. I can't remember how long they had to wait for their tours to begin (I passed the time hiking with my dog), but they were finished touring both castles and getting the requiste Mary's Bridge photographs by 1 in the afternoon.

At other times of the year when I took guests to the castles, they never had to wait long at all.

Hey Anthony,

It's been a few years, but we also stayed in Fuessen twice and one stay visited Neuschwanstein and the other stay visited Hohenschwangau castle. Both times we got there between 8 or 8:30am and didn't have a long line yet.

I've also just purchased tickets the same day as the tour with almost no wait. but I always visited on a weekday. I have noticed certain tour times do fill up (usually due to a large tour group's schedule) so if you have to have a certain time that could be a reason to book in advance.

My daughter and I were there in early May. I did reserve tickets ahead, but didn't really need to. Our Hohenschwangau tour was 9:20, so I arrived around 8 when the ticket office opened to pick up our tickets and there were about 8-10 people ahead of me. We spent the night in Hohenshwangau (very peaceful after the day trippers and tour buses leave). The tour buses start arriving around 8:30 or 9 am. It wasn't super busy in May, but not sure how busy July would be.
