I will be traveling by car with my family in southern Germany in late June. We plan on visiting smaller towns - some more touristy than others. Do we need to reserve hotels before we go or could we find places to stay once we are there? None of us speak German. Thank you.
Don´t nail me down on it, but i don´t think so(except Special Times in the year, a Fair, the Oktoberfest in Munich, the 200 Years Festival of the Völkerschlacht in Leipzig, )
A few years ago i got a good Hotel in Leipzig from the 26th december to January maybe a week or two before.
Last Year i got a room in Aschaffenburg over the Weekend also a few days maybe a week before.
But if it´s really a small City, i don´t know if it could be different
I have done both (although I was cycling rather than driving). If you can plan a fixed itinerary, then I would reserve ahead of time. Then you can get which ever place you want and don't have to take the time to search for a room. However, if you are going to play it by ear, then you will probably be ok, but expect to have to go to the next town if every room is booked.
The night before you arrive in the next city, check booking.com or some other booking service and reserve your room, rather than spending time looking for a place when you arrive. Reservation is instantaneous, only available rooms will show, reviews for I'm guests are available, or you can call the hotel directly if you prefer.
