My husband and I are leaving for Germany tomorrow and will be in Berlin in a few days for 6 days. I am trying to discover how to book ahead for reservations at the Pergamon Museum (website is in German), and I'm wondering if I have to book reservations ahead for any other of the museums--Neues, German History, and DDR Museums. (I have found the appropriate site to reserve at the Reichstag, which looks quite user-friendly.). We will likely purchase a 3 day Museum Pass on arrival. As the weather looks iffy I am also wondering how far in advance one should book times at these museums and at the Reichstag. Thank you for any and all responses!
I was in Berlin last week (5/5-12/2019) and did not encounter any lines at the museums, including the Pergamum. The only museum you can book a timed entry to is the Pergamum. But, if you are planning on purchasing the 3-day museum pass, than I wouldn’t bother spending the extra money to get a timed ticket. If there happens to be a line, you can always go to a nearby museum and go back to the Pergamum later in the day. (Note, the wing with the Pergamum Alter is currently closed, as are several other smaller rooms. It only took me a little longer than an hour to get through the rooms that were open.)
To tour the Reichstag Dome, you MUST book a time slot in advanced. This does tend to sell out, so I would recommend booking ASAP through their website. It’s in English and like you said, user friendly. If your schedule is flexible, you can book in person the morning off, but there's no guarantee there will be openings, and there's something like a minimum of 2 hours between booking and actual entry because of the required security clearance. (Don’t forget your passport when you go.)
Great choice on picking Berlin for a visit! It's my favorite city in Europe.
Pergamon Museum website: https://www.smb.museum/museen-und-einrichtungen/pergamonmuseum/home.html
At the top right-hand corner of the home page, there is a "DE/EN". Click on the EN, and the site will be in English.
I was also in Berlin last week. I went to the Neues Museum on Monday with a friend primarily to see the Nefertiti. We went about 90 minutes before closing. There was no line to buy a ticket, and the museum was fairly empty. So... weekday toward the end of the day at the Pergamon or the Neues Museum, you should not have much trouble with lines.
The German History Museum and DDR Museum do not require advance purchase/time reservations -- not sure you can even get these. The DDR Museum can be annoyingly crowded with school groups this time of year.
I was there in high season (July) a couple of years ago and didn't encounter lines at any of the museums at any time of day, even the Pergamon. I had a museum pass and it was just walk right in. The only thing I needed a reservation for was the tour of the Reichstag bldg.
Regarding the “DE/EN” versions of the website ... once you click through to the booking site, its only in available in German. I was able to book an advanced ticket using Google translate to verify I was clicking the right thing. In order to get the timed entry, you must buy a combo ticket for both the museum and the Panorama for € 19. But again, there were no lines, so I wouldn’t spend the extra money for the time entry.
Wow, such great and fast response -- thank you Amy, Dave, and Nancy! (First time posting a question.). This is very helpful indeed, as far as planning our time to visit these museums. I will reserve at the Reichstag right away.
No need to get advance tickets for the German History Museum (DHM) on Unter den Linden...just walk in. The ground floor area where the front desk is located is huge
My bad on the DE/EN part! :)
