Hi everyone,
My wife and I will be in Germany for a couple weeks in October starting October 6. We have looked at the 49E Deutsche Bahn ticket and believe we understand it's limitations and still feel that it would be a good fit for us. We would like to pre- purchase now for travel in October and cancel before we leave our home in Canada for our German adventure. We only have one phone so we would need both of our DB tickets on that phone to show if asked while traveling.
What app(s) should we use and are there any options available to purchase for the one month without having to cancel? Any suggestions that you could offer that would allow this elderly, non- computer savvy poster appear at least somewhat component in their wife's eyes would be greatly appreciated. Probably best to add that we do not know German.
You probably want to use two different apps, since you are logged into your account on the app and I’m not sure you can buy a ticket for someone else while logged in. So I’d create an account for you on one app and one for your wife on the other app, and just switch between the apps when showing your tickets to a conductor.
We used the MVV (Munich) app which lets you use a credit card and cancel anytime (and can be in English). I think the HVV Switch (Hamburg) provides the same features.
As far as I know, there are very few apps that allow the purchase of more than one DT. One of them can be found at deutschlandticket.de, a website of Transdev, a major carrier of local trains. The easiest way to use this offer is via Google Wallet.
Or, as suggested, simply install two different apps, e.g. MVV and Bremen Fahrplaner or use the Tranzer web site (a reseller that has a small fee but the advantage of automatic cancellation, cf. the recommendations of the Man in Seat 61).
My husband and I are traveling to Bavaria in August, and we also plan to purchase a €49 Deutschland-Ticket for each of us. We will travel completely by train and will be staying in Munich, Füssen, Augsburg, Nuremberg, and Munich (again). There are regional options between each city, so we'll be able to avoid the high-speed trains that aren't covered by the D-Ticket. Before purchasing the tickets, I have a couple questions:
- The MVV app has been recommended a number of times on this forum, and we plan to each download it. Has anyone experienced any issues when using the ticket within the app while in Germany?
- I've read that the D-Ticket auto renews each month. Can I cancel the subscription for September during August?
- Is the D-Ticket valid on all Bavarian public transit, specifically trams and buses in the cities mentioned earlier and Munich's S-bahn?
Thanks!
The MVV app works well. It may be just a little to early to buy an October ticket. I would look to buy it in September. When you purchase through the MVV app, you will receive an email that also includes the link for cancelling the subscription. Wait 5 minutes and cancel it. You will still have your October D ticket active and working.
This works on public transport with the exception of high speed trains. Regional trains and regional transportation (buses, trams) are covered.
I'm not sure about two people trying to use just one phone. I would set up an MVV account for each of you. Purchase the tickets. With just one phone I would probably save a screen shot of one of the QR code tickets and then be logged in to the other person's account to show that QR code ticket.
Here is the link with lots of information. There may be a way to have two tickets on one account, I just don't know what it is.

I have a couple questions:
1. The MVV app has been recommended a number of times on this forum, and we plan to each download it. Has anyone experienced any issues when using the ticket within the app while in Germany?
2. I've read that the D-Ticket auto renews each month. Can I cancel the subscription for September during August?
3. Is the D-Ticket valid on all Bavarian public transit, specifically trams and buses in the cities mentioned earlier and Munich's S-bahn?
Ad 1. I used the MVV app for a while. It works well, but is not as easy to set up as other apps (you have to open an account first and then set up the app). The British train expert Man in seat 61 therefore recommends the Bremer Fahrplaner app or Tranzer (cf. #2).
Ad 2. you must cancel by August 10 at the latest; this is a standard deadline that applies to all carriers. Alternatively, you can follow another recommendation of the Man-61 and book via the Dutch reseller Tranzer, who will automatically cancel the ticket after booking for an additional charge of €2.70. You will receive the ticket by email and can then import it into Apple or Google Wallet.
Ad 3. Of course. The DT is valid on any means of local transportation, period.
I have used the D-Ticket via MVV app on two occasions. No problems at all. Easy purchase and cancellation as they send an email with a link to cancel when you get a ticket.
I was curious about buying a second ticket for someone else. So I went to the MVV-Mobile Ticket FAQs at https://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/tickets-and-fares/online-und-handyticket/frequently-asked-questions-mvv-mobileticket/index.html Here is what I found:
Can I buy a MobileTicket for someone else?
Yes, you can. You will have
to enter the full name and the date of birth of that person when
purchasing the ticket. In the event of a ticket inspection, the ticket
owner has to present the ticket and an official photo ID (e.g.
identity card, passport). Please note that purchased tickets cannot be transferred to other
devices or the number of transfers is limited for security reasons. If
it is not possible for you to travel with the person you have bought
the ticket for, the ticket must be purchased on the other person's
device. Showing a screenshot is not allowed.
BTW, on trains if there was a conductor they always asked for my D-Ticket. About half then asked to see my Passport. On public transport you are expected to have a ticket or pass if you board. Transit police occasionally board and start checking for tickets/passes. The one time this happend they did not ask to see my Passport. Personally, I would not want to be caught trying to cheat the system.
@sla019 - Thanks for answering my questions!
