Report from Cologne/Situation on the Ground: Cologne

Hi there!

Just wanted to tell everyone about my experience getting to Cologne.

Flew out of LAX yesterday. Our flight was late by 50 minutes so we ended up missing our connecting train in Frankfurt. Frankfurt airport is a bit chaotic (and I have to agree with the one poster on here who said it was).

Boarding the plane we showed our CDC cards (I think twice?), we had already filled out the "Digital Registration on Entry" and uploaded proof there as well as to the airline prior to departure, and of course the passport. The plane would like a printed out copy of your "digital registration on entry" even if you already did it.

Once we got here we walked (which felt like a mile) from our plane over to the border control area. There were about 20 people or so but it took a good 45 minutes with 4 attendants working. They really looked at everything and wanted our hotel address we were staying at, our vaccination cards, the "digital entry upon registration" paper confirmation and our passports of course. Once they stamped it all we were allowed in and then had to fetch our bags post passport control at Frankfurt airport.

The bags were down by the long haul route station (so walking another mile). We had to end up changing our train tickets since the flight was late by 50 minutes or so. It was a good workout. (picture me and my friend basically half-dead by 3pm). On the train I don't think anyone actually checked out ticket at all.

Went to restaurant last night, we have some laminated copies of the CDC cards with it which we show to people in restaurants and hotels. Honestly one cannot tell the difference between the copy and the real thing (if you do it well in hi-res and the right ratios). So I do 100% recommend taking some extra copies so you don't have to show your real ones as much. They do ask and check it everywhere.

We'll be going to a pharmacy today to try to get a QR code for the app. Food was excellent last night!

Most people have been friendly and a couple people talked to us since we were Americans, we looked a bit like a goldfish in a fishbowl at the restaurant (seemed to be a local Germans) I think since people haven't seen a lot of Americans here in a while.

Will post again further into our trip.

Thanks so everyone on this forum who gave us a lot of tips before we boarded the plane

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this. Good to know about the photocopied CDC cards.
I'd love to know if you're able to get the QR code at the pharmacy (and if it's free or for a fee; post here say that Switzerland is charging 30 to 50 Swiss Francs). Have a wonderful trip and thanks again!

Carolyn... When I was in Berlin in early September, the pharmacy did not charge anything to provide the German EU vaccination certificate that could be uploaded to an app. I will add that I thought it in good taste to buy something since I was asking them for a service, so I requested an allergy medication from the pharmacist and got a German-labeled generic version of Xyzal.

jaeson... Thanks for your report. I had nothing but positive responses on my recent trip to Germany when I identified myself as an American (not that I go out of my way to tell people, but I answer honestly when they ask). I think Americans showing up in Europe is another one of those markers that life is moving toward normal.

Dave, I completely agree about making a purchase at the pharmacy and plan to do the same. I should have added that. Also, good to hear your presence wasn't viewed negatively. I've been a bit worried about that. Thank you.

I was able to get it at a pharmacy, we didn't purchase anything- I just looked pathetic and said "hello can you help us, I've downloaded the covpass app. Thanks!" The lady entered it in about 2 minutes at a pharmacy in the train station. Now we just show that wherever we go, no problem.

Thank you so much for posting! We'll be in Cologne next month (also flying into FRA) and this is so helpful.

How long before you left did you do the digital registration upon entry form?

If you miss a train in Germany, it is not necessary to change your ticket. Local trains rarely check tickets, but others do. Be warned.....if you choose to not buy a ticket, and are asked for your ticket, there is a hefty fine.

We were in Germany in August and had a wonderful time. Our only frustration was buying train tickets from a machine at the Frankfort Airport. We found out that you must use a card with a pin number....this is fairly new. We finally went to the manned ticket booth (seemed like a mile away) :-) and used our pinless Visa card with a signature . For future train purchases we used a debit card. Always carry a backup card!

Jennifer--

Back at the end of August, I completed the Digitale Einreiseanmeldung 3 or 4 nights before arrival in Germany (also at Frankfurt!).

I'm catching a flight Thursday to Frankfurt and filled out the Digitale Einreiseanmeldung tonight (Tuesday night). It took less than 20 minutes to complete the process.

You can complete it as early as five days before entry.
