We may be renting a car on our trip to Germany. If we do that we will probably stay in smaller towns and take public transit if we go into any cities. Spending most of our time in Bavarian/Austrian Alps hiking. So I guess Frankfurt will be the only major city we will have to drive in. It looks like the Frankfurt airport is on the southern edge of the city. Maybe we can avoid the main part of the city when we drive out? Is it pretty straight forward driving out of Frankfurt from the Frankfurt airport?

Yes, it’s an easy drive out from the Frankfurt airport. It’s right off the highway with no city driving nearby. I would caution against driving right after a transatlantic flight.

It is an easy drive south. I have done it, but be ready you are dumped out directly onto an autobahn.

Getting “on the road” from Frankfurt airport is easy and very well signed. No city driving at all.
