Rental car--how do I know I get the correct car category

I will pick up my rental car at Europcar in Freilassing. This rental agency has mixed reviews, per Google Maps. My questions:

  1. Have you used this agency before? If so, what was your experience? I understand that things may change over time.

  2. My rental category is a BMW 2 series (intermediate) and I know that the actual car may be of a different make and model. So, how do I know that I get the car of the right category? I am not a big car enthusiast and know less about EU cars.

  3. For those who rented from Europcar before, did you sign a contract in English? What if it's not available?

This will be my first time renting in Germany and from this company. Previously, I had two good rentals (Enterprise in Spain and a small, local agency in Greece), and one horrible experience (Enterprise at Zurich airport). So,, I really don't know what to expect. I will return the car later at Munich airport. Thanks.

We have had a rental car from Europcar at least 3 times. The first time we rented directly from them, picked up in Colmar, France and dropped in Tours, France. Agreement was in English, absolutely no problem with the rental. We have also rented twice thru Autoeurope and the company we choose was Europcar. Again no problems. We don't care much about cars. I usually pick the cheapest choice and I probably wouldn't know if I got a different category of car.

The 2 series 4 dr is 4 inches shorter than a Corolla or Civic. Otherwise very similar in dimensions.

We’ve used Europcar several times with no problems. In 2018 we picked up an Estate Car (rental category) for 3 weeks from Frankfurt to Munich. When I booked the rental, the car “model” example was a Volkswagen Passat. What we received was a Opel Insignia. It had less than 30 km on it. We forgot to ask them to change the GPS to English and never could figure it out! Oh well, chalk it up to part of the adventure.

You are not guaranteed a BMW 2 series. That is just one of several model examples. You are guaranteed something “similar”. You need to be ok with getting what they have available. Make sure to specify an automatic transmission or you are likely to get a stick shift. If you’re not happy with the car they give you, you can ask if they have anything else available, but selection may be limited at a non-airport location.

Every car rental agreement that I have signed has been in English. During the reservation process you fill out you address, and I think that determines the language. You will get an email confirmation with all your info. If it’s in English, you’re good. Otherwise email or call and request it to be changed.

I’d like to add that if they ask you if you want navigation, say no. All the cars have nav built in but if you say you want it, they will charge you a daily rate. Another way they can make more money.
I rented a car in Hamburg a week ago. She asked that question and I said I didn’t need it. The car had it anyway.

We have rented cars in Freilassing several times from Europcar. Our experiences have been fine. Have rented from 2 different gas stations.. We always feel the car received was in the class we paid for. Unless you really know your cars, it is hard to judge. Be sure to take detailed photos of the car to document any previous damage. If all goes as planned, we will be picking up a car there early next week.

Is concerned, get the dimensions of the BMW 2. That will give you an idea of what size it should be in the event you get the “or similar” mentioned in every contract. Any time we haven’t gotten what we reserved we were given the next category at no extra charge. Not all cars come with maps loaded even if the car is equipped with a navigation system. We always have our own GPS or use our phone. If the one in the car works, fine, if not, we’ll use our own.
