My husband and I are traveling in Germany with a rental car from Luxembourg. We are heading toward Leipzig. Our GPS tells us we need an environmental sticker. We are not sure what to do. Any advice would be appreciated.
Have you already rented the car and are you already in Europe?
Some info here---- https://www.germanemissionssticker.com/
Is there a sticker already on the car?
Yes we have already rented the car and have been driving through Belgium and Western Germany for 6 days. The car does not have a sticker on it
Information specific to Leipzig including a map.

You will need to take the car to a vehicle Inspection company or a "larger dealership" to see if you can buy a green sticker. Otherwise park the car outside of Leipzig for the duration of your stay.
We are not sure what to do.
Either buy a sticker or stay out of the Umweltzone. Stickers can be bought in petrol stations, but I'm not sure how easy it is for non-German cars.
Thank you very much for your help
regarding how easy for non-German cars - when I did it for my English car it involved finding a Tüv location and showing my car papers (in England we call it a logbook, maybe others would call it Registration) which show engine size and pollution specs, and after a cursory inspection and payment of a small fee he issued the sticker. I don't remember if they affixed it or if I did.
Probably the best bet is park outside the Zone and bus or tram in. No worries then.
That green emission sticker is one reason I rented a car from Frankfurt rather than in France. It’s also why we’re staying in Colmar rather than Strasbourg, France as one is needed in Strasbourg and we won’t have a French one. I’m interested to know how you end up dealing with the issue.
Seems with all the emissions zones, the EU would come up with a standardized system, especially since one can pass through a few countries in a few hours.
If finding a place to get the sticker, as other have suggested, does not work easily, I would contact the local/closest office of your rental car company to get advice/assistance of where/how to get it.
We rented a car in Amsterdam and took a day trip to Cologne to see the Cathedral.
I only now learned about these environmental stickers and that the Cathedral is in such a zone so either the car had a sticker (unlikely) or we lucked out in not being pulled over.
The vehicle was a 2022 plug in hybrid so should have been a low emission vehicle
you would not have been pulled over, it is camera enforcement. Watch the mail and watch the credit card for a approx 45 euro information disclosure fee.
We ended up driving to the Leipzig airport for advice. On our way to our lodging. The Avis counter was closed on the weekend, but a helpful young man at the Sixt counter said that he didn’t think we needed to worry about it, that the police didn’t pay much attention to the stickers. We ended up driving the car only to our rented accommodations and out of the city one day and then turned the car in. We had no problems.

Just like "Jeopardy", Nigel provided an answer before I posed the question about 'is it a photo enforcement thing'?
'is it a photo enforcement thing'?
No in Germany is it not.
I will keep a watch out for a credit card charge.
I told the guy at the Avis counter at Schiphol that we were going to Cologne and he didn't say anything. Maybe it is too much to expect for him to know all the regulations in other countries even if they are adjacent.
