Rental car drop in Garmisch or Munich?

Planning a driving trip thru Rhine Valley, the Black Forest & Bavaria. Towards the end of the trip, we will drive from Fussen to Innsbruck for a day trip, then drive later that day to overnight in Garmisch. The next day we will do the Zugspitze day trip & spend the rest of the day in Garmisch. The following morning we will go to Munich for a day before leaving the next day via train to Budapest.
Question: I have seen comments on this board about how much fun it is to drive in Munich. Would I be better off to drop the car in Garmisch on the night that I arrive & two days later take the train to Munich, where we will be overnighting in the area of the train station.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I would save the extra car rental days and drop the car in Garmisch. The drive time and train time are about the same from Garmisch to Munich, and if your hotel is near the train station, then there is really no reason to drive in.

Drop the car in Garmisch. We've driven in Munich, it's not a lot of fun.

If your next destination is by train anyway, I would definitely drop the car in Garmisch. It is an easy train ride to the center of Munich.

Not the question you asked, but I'll add this anyway. If Zugspitze is a priority, ascend the first chance you get that good weather allows. I would suggest that if the weather is clear after you finish at Füssen, ditch the plans for Innsbruck and head straight for the mountain. From Füssen, you'll approach from the Austrian side, so if weather looks good, you can decide right then and there to take the gondola to the top. General rule for the Alps- if the weather is favorable, take the first chance you get, because you may not get another. Seeing Innsbruck is far less weather-dependent, so you can visit it on a cloudy or overcast day. However... despite the stunning location, most of us find Innsbruck not too impressive.

Hey Walter,

It have to agree with Tom on one point. If you have good weather the day you leave Fuessen, head right to Ehrwald, Austria (not far from Fuessen) and do the Zugspitze from there. Never know when the weather will cooperate. This route, via Reutte, is on the way to Innsbruck anyway. That said, we happen to love Innsbruck and the area. Innsbruck has a nice old town with stunning, high alps surrounding it. We have visited 6 times.

If you stop and do the Zugspite and then find out you have to cut Innsbruck, I'd still do the Zugspitze. If you can do both, great. If not, do the Zugspitze.

Thanks to all for advice. I'm married, so I can follow instructions: We will watch weather & make best decision on going up the mountain. We will drop car in Garmisch & take the train to Munich.
Thanks again for the feedback.
