Rent a Car in Germany (Nuernberg)

Hi - Does anyone know what it takes to rent a car in Germany? Will US driving license suffice? Insurance?
Can anyone recommend a car rental place in Nuernberg?

It’s as simple as renting a car in America. There is no advantage to choosing an American rental company. The German Hertz isn’t the same company anyway, for example. EDITED to correct insurance info

Get your International Drivers License at any AAA just in case someone might ask for it. That process takes about 10 minutes and costs ≈$35

If you have status with Hertz, Sixt will match that with your membership in their loyalty program. You just send an email and photo proof of your Status.

I am very surprised that your home car policy will cover you in Germany. Is that new? Mine never did....

I'd ask and check very carefully before making that assumption.

Your normal car insurance covers you.

Maybe, maybe not. Most polices are different in many respects. You'll be well served to get an answer directly from the horse's mouth. Email your insurance company and get the answer in writing. Their answer is the only one that matters.

When you rent a car it has liability. You need to buy CDW coverage. Many ways to do that. Check you CC it generally has CDW. I always buy CDW with no deductible.

Your credit card may cover your car rental. I have a Costco Citi card and when we went to Ireland, I had to get a letter from them. This is what it said:

"Coverage is valid for first party damages only. Coverage extends worldwide.

What is covered: The cost of repairs or the cash value of the car, whichever is less, if a covered accident or theft occurs when you pay for a rental car in full with your Citi card and decline the rental company’s collision loss/damage insurance.
Who is covered: You as long as the rental was purchased with a U.S. issued eligible card. Anyone designated as an authorized driver or covered by the rental car agreement. Coverage applies worldwide, including the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Coverage is subject to the terms, conditions and exclusions of the policy. "

Apologies. I was incorrect. Thanks to those who responded about insurance.

I've been told it is better to get the insurance coverage from the car rental company at time of checkin. There will be zero worry and hassle. Bumps and dings are waved off under their insurance.

If you have USAA you can get insurance in Germany for rental cars.

Be advised that almost all rentals are manual transmission, and if you don't know how to drive one in traffic this would not be the time to learn. Also be advised that hybrid and EV's are very common rentals also. In Nuremberg I used to use the Sixt office by the main train station.
