Regional Day Ticket for Bavaria

I’ve managed to confuse myself. Traveling from Munich to Fussen, and also Munich to Salzburg. How does the regional day ticket work— can I buy these tickets now for September and reserve specific trains (we have timed tickets for Neuschwanstein, and an early bike tour in Salzburg) to make sure we get on a train that will get us where we are going in time? Thank you for your time!

The Bayern Ticket / Bavaria ticket is a day pass for regional trains only - valid any hour on Sat or Sun, after 9 weekdays. You can't reserve seats on these trains as a rule. You should probably not pre-purchase the ticket - it's non-refundable. The ticket will still be available on the day of travel from a ticket machine in Germany.

Check the DB itinerary search page for your dates to find regional trains; check the "only local transport" box to pull up only regional trains:

What time are your Neuschwanstein reservations? And on a week day or weekend? Ditto for your early bike tour.

Castle ticket is 13:55 on Sept 9 (Sunday). Salzburg bike tour is 9:30 Sept 11. Thoughts on when to leave Munich for the castles? Thanks everyone!

The 9:52 from Munich will get you to the bus stop near the Neuschwanstein ticket office by 12:13. You should check in at the ticket office at least 1 hour before your reservation time, so that should work. Take an earlier train if you want to see Fuessen for a bit.

For Salzburg, you can buy Sparpreis tickets for 2 now for 39.80 EUR and take the 7:24 Railjet, that will get you to the Salzburg Hbf by 8:58. Will that be time enough? You can use a Bayern Ticket for the return trip.

make sure we get on a train

It is very unlikely that a train on that route will be so crowded that you won't be able to get on it at all without a seat reservation. If a train is very busy and all the seats are occupied you are still allowed to stand.
