Regensburg hotels

We're planning on a two weeks Germany-Austria trip April/May, 2022 [ covid-willing]. I think I have most of the trip drafted, thanks to everyone here.

After being in Salzburg, traveling by train, I'd like to spend a night in Regensburg, before heading onto Rothenburg, and then the Rhine Valley [sleeping in Boppard.]

RS does not include this town in the guidebook. I'll locate the TI and find a guided walking tour in English, I hope. I also need suggestions for a moderately priced hotel with breakfast .

Thanks for all your help.

I like the Hotel Orphee in the middle of the Altstadt, but it may be too pricey. Good breakfast too. Not the Andreasstadel St. Andrew's Barn.

Regensburg TI: https://tourismus.regensburg.de/en/special-themes/welcome/tourist-information.html

For independent walking tours, Earl Steinbicker's Day Trips Bavaria: 23 One-Day Adventures includes Salzburg, Regensburg and Rothenburg. It's available used for less than $4 on Amazon, but if it's as useful as Steinbicker's "Day Trips Germany: 63 One-day Adventures", which has taken me to many fine places around the country, then it's worth much more than $4.

Pat, do you know when you will be in Boppard? I will be there from May 8 to 11.

Also, a friend of mine stayed at the Hotel Goldenes Kreus (he found it through Lonely Planet) a few years ago and really liked it. I looked it up and it looks like rooms start at €105 and go up from there. It doesn't look like they have a booking service either, so you have to call or email them about rooms. https://www.hotel-goldeneskreuz.com/english/rooms

They do offer breakfast and it looks like it is included. https://www.hotel-goldeneskreuz.com/english/breakfast/

We like the Hotel Weidenhof and have stayed there 6 times. It is 3 blocks from the train station just inside the pedestrian zone. The staff is professional and friendly. The breakfast bar is good. The rooms are about average in size, well maintained and clean. The clientele is a mix of business folks, an occasional tour group and some tourists.

When the Weidenhof was full a couple times we have stayed at other hotels for which we paid more and enjoyed less.

We have used the TI and found their pamphlets useful. Regensburg has ancient to Rocco churches (including a grand but dark cathederal), Roman ruins that have been incorporated into more recent buildings, a famous 1100's stone bridge, etc. Wikipedia does a good job on Regensburg. We are going there for 3 days in April and my wife just said yesterday that Regensburg has become her favorite city in Germany. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

I'm really looking forward to Regensburg, based on all of your comments.

Mardee, we will just miss you, leaving Boppard May 2. I'll try to post helpful hints before you leave.
Russ, you are an unbelievable wealth of info. I'll order that.
Gary and mchpp, thanks for the hotel recommendations!

Thanks to all for the useful and very practical info. I read all of it very carefully and base my planning on what I learned; you all have not failed me yet!

Safe travels!

My favorite hotel in Regensburg is the Hotel am Peterstor. It is nothing upscale, but comfortable and quiet and only a 7 minutes walk from the train station, but still in the old town.

We spent a night in Regensburg during the Christmas Markets in early December 2019 and had planned to return this past December - but!!!!! We stayed at the Hotel am Dom and really liked it. Right in the center of the town and easy walk to all the sites. We took a cab from the train station but it would have been walkable. We did not have a guided tour but a quick Google search might help to locate one. When you are strolling around town, do take note of the "stumbling stones" set into the sidewalk amongst the cobblestones. They are brass and bear the names of the Jewish residents who were sent away to camps by the Nazis. The stones are usually set in the sidewalk in front of the homes of the Jewish residents. A poignant moment in our walks. I had just finished reading "The Guest Book" and learned of the stones.

Oh dear, I need to amend my post - it's the Hotel Goliath am Dom in Regensburg. Sorry for the error. Loved staying there and will definitely stay on a return trip, hopefully this December!
