Hi, everyone! Debating whether to make Regensburg a day trip from Munich, or just leave Munich a day early and stay the night in Regensburg before traveling on to Fussen. It's going a little bit in the wrong direction, but we wouldn't be as pressed for time once we got into Regensburg since we could stay for an evening. Thoughts?
I've never visited Regensburg but have read mainly very good reviews about it on this forum. I dislike frequent location changes and for me it's close enough to catch some of the evening ambiance and return to Munich, if that is your thought. Direct trains close to 9, 10 and 11pm (1.5 hours).
Easier the next day to reach Fussen.
I did the Munich to Regensburg back to Munich as a day trip earlier this year. It is easy to do and Regensburg, with all due respect, just isn't that big. Great little town, nice museum of the salt trade, fun "Dachel Museum" if you know anyone who need Dachshund stuff (my daughter has two)... Nice restaurants and cafes. Have fun.
We did it as a day trip from Munich in December. We used our Bayern Pass and spent the day and took the train back after the Christmas market and dinner. We didn’t feel rushed. For us it was worth it as the train ride was easy and I dislike changing hotels if possible.
I usually stay 2-3 nights when I visit. There's a lot to see and do. You can see the old town in a day, but that's about all.
I like the feeling/mood/stimmung in Regensburg. A good part of that is the cafe, bars and restaurants. I would overnight, but take advantage of evening. Find some local places and/or places you find and enjoy.
We did a day trip to Regenburg from Nurnburg. Its a pleasant place which is not overly touristy. It is a hike from the train station to the river of about a mile as I recall.
This is also the site of one of the most infamous USAF bombing runs of WWII where Le May lost a lot of planes.
We also did a day trip to Fussen from Munich - its about 2 hours each way. Fussen itself is really small and kinda cute with an interesting castle perched above, but then you have to take a bus to get over to the Disneyland castle and then walk up a mile or so. A lot of people just get their instagram picture in front of the place, but some pay to go in. As pretty as it is, its so fake, and I like the one in town better as more authentic. I would not bother going to Fussen again, unless I was going to keep on going across to Austria from there.
This is all so incredibly helpful, and appreciated!
