Regensburg and the Christmas Markets

My daughters and I (5) are planning a trip to Regensburg Germany, during the weekend of Thanksgiving (4-5 days) to see the Christmas Markets. We'll be flying into and out of Munich and will depend on trains for our transportation. Are there some quaint interesting villages nearby that we should be checking out in addition to everything Regensburg has to offer. Any suggestions for Regensburg? Thank ou! Judy

Did you check the dates that the markets open?
I love Rothenburg, and altho their markets are small, the town in magical!
Have a great trip!

We love Regensburg for its many churches in diverse architectural styles, its Roman ruins, and the many squares and alleyways. It is a fun city to walk around. If you happen to like Käthe Kollwitz, Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie on the edge of old town has a nice collection of her work, plus its traveling exhibits have been interesting.

One of Regensburg Christmas Markets is on the Thurn and Taxis palace grounds.

There are several places that are interesting day trips from Regensburg. Landshut, Straubing and Amberg have all been enjoyable for us. None are villages but the core Altstadt (old town) of each is small enough to easily visited on foot from the train station. I love Rothenburg as well but it would be too far for a day trip for us.

We really enjoyed the Thurn and Taxis market. There is an admission charge (I believe €4-5) but I felt it was money well-spent because of the atmosphere and quality of merchandise.

I think the Thun and Taxis Christmas Market is one of the best! It is done as an old world market and has lots of atmosphere. The admission is higher than quoted above and higher still on weekends.
