I am interested in the same information. We will have a whole day in Regensburg and 2 hours (8-10 am) in Passau in May. I am interested in historical sites and building and scenic views. Thanks for any help you can give.

Regensburg is a very walkable downtown and an Unesco World Heritage Sight. You will find a wealth of squares and alleyways that make a walk interesting.

The massive Gothic Dom St. Peter (cathedral) and Porta Praetoria (Roman Gate) are both near the river front and each other a worth a visit. Also near is the Steinerne Brücke (Stone Bridge- 1146 A.D.). Located in the tower of the bridge is a small museum devoted to the city as a heritage sight. Good views from bridge tower of the Danube River. A few blocks from the Dom is the Alte Kapelle (chapel) which was converted to the Rococo Style, an interesting contrast to the gothic Dom.

Across town (~15 min walk) is St Emmeram. It is a former monastery that is now the palace of the Thurn and Taxis family. My wife toured the palace and enjoyed it. I settled for a visit to the palace church which has been partially converted from Romanesque to Baroque.

The Shottenkirche (Scottish Church) or St. Jakobs, founded by Irish Missionaries is in also interesting. The interior is not much but the facade (inclosed in glass) is a fantasy seascape with sea monsters and mermen.

The tourist office in Regensburg is located in the Altes Rathaus (old city hall) and has excellent maps and pamphlets. It is also only a few blocks from the Dom.

With only a two hours in Passau I would mainly spend time walking the River Fronts of the Danube and Inn Rivers. The Dom St. Stephan is on the peninsula between the two rivers and worth a visit and the oldest part of town is in that area. Beautiful town for a walk.

In Passau we walked up to Veste Oberhaus fortress. One gets a good view of the town from it. Saint Stephen’s cathedral was nice, but it and its pipe organ concert were included in the cruise tour. Regensburg was nice to walk around. If you like sausages visit Wurstkuchl sausage near where our cruise ship moored. It is supposedly the oldest restaurant in Germany. It only accepted cash back in 2015.

In Regensburg I like to drop into the Brauereigaststätte Kneitinger. The Spitalbrauerei Wirtshaus & Biergarten is nice too. There is the Weltenburger am Dom (Kloster Weltenburg Bier) too. Of course there is the Historische Wurstküche. Take a look at the high water marks there. Don't miss the small lanes in the Altstadt. The Maidult 2022 Fest is scheduled for 13-29 May.

Passau is underrated as a tourist destination. Lovely little Baroque city. In two hours you'll mostly just want to stroll the old core, poke heads into churches etc. There are some interesting flood level marker here and there along the river fronts - pretty crazy how high the water's gone.
