Read the German Rail Pass brochure, no.
Other than the ICE to Brussels and the EC to northern Italy, international connections are by IC Bus, which are covered by the rail pass, but there is no GRP covered connection to Vienna.
That connection could be ticketed as a Savings Fare ticket, but you are a little late to get a real good reduction.
Hi Lee,
How do i travel this stretch..??can u suggest something
Hi Lee,
Can I travel from Munich to Salzburg then Salzburg to Vienna for this??
Is Munich to salzburg covered in the GRP..??
Any advice on this will be of great help..
Thanks ,
Vineeta
The train to Salzburg is covered by the German Rail Pass, then take the hourly Westbahn train to Vienna. Tickets can be bought on the train for 26.50 EUR. Might want to have cash as I don't know if they take credit cards.
Hi,
There are two advantages taking the Westbahn: 1, it's cheaper, hop on, then buy your ticket. 2. Westbahn stops at Westbahnhof whereas OeBB trains skip that and head direct to Meidling and Wien Hbf.
Now, if you have luggage in tow, want to take which ever train that goes first from Salzburg to Vienna, you get off at St Pölten, then wait for the next Westbahn train to go to Wien Westbahnhof. It might cost a little more but better to avoid the crowds at Wien Hbf and then transfering with the U-Bahn to get to Westbahnhof, ie, no direct U-Bahn link between Wien Hbf and Westbahnhof.....only if you intend to go to Wien West from Salzburg in the first place. Very few get off and on at St Pölten Hbf.
Munich to Salzburg is covered by the GRP, but the route by regional train costs only 25€¹ with a Bayern-Ticket. Unless you have a consecutive day pass, you might not want to use a day of your pass for this inexpensive connection.
Right now I see an EC/RJ connection leaving Munich at 11:34, getting to Vienna at 16:30 with a 29€ Saving Fare ticket from the Bahn website (that's less than using WestBahn from Salzburg).
If you don't need to use any conveyance of the MVV to get to the train station (either Munich Hbf or Munich Ost), you can use a Meridian Guten-Tag-Ticket from Munich to Salzburg for 21€¹.
With both the Bayern-Ticket and the Guten-Tag-Ticket, you cannot use the ticket for travel before 9 AM workdays.
¹ First person, up to 4 additional travelers 6€ each.
Might want to have cash as I don't know if they take credit cards.
They do: Visa, MasterCard and Diner's are accepted on board.
Thank you so much everyone..!!
