My husband and I have the opportunity for a last-minute trip to Germany for 1 week at the end of this month/beginning of February. We have to fly in and out of Hannover, but once there we are renting a car and can go anywhere. I'd rather not spend the time in a city, but I'm sure that in smaller towns, sites will likely have shortened hours and hotels may be closed. Any regional recommendations from those who have visited at this time of year? I'm open to most things, but we won't be skiing. Thanks!
Two places that I would recommend would be a visit to the town of Celle and a days visit to Bergen-Belsen.
Celle is filled with lovely, half-timbered buildings and is a joy to see. Bergen-Belsen is of course the opposite of joy, but their exhibition there is all encompassing and well worth at least half a day or a full day if you want to read all of the text and watch all of the films.
It will be cold.
Goslar is a beautiful and walkable old town filled with half-timber houses. The main square and town hall (Rathaus) are very worth a visit. I did visit there in February once, but only for an overnight. Dress for the weather and make frequent stops at cafes, a good exposure to local atmosphere. Gary
