Recommendations Welcome: Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and/or Hohenschwangau

Hi. My family (me, my husband, parents - 60s + toddlers - 1.5 & 4) will be traveling through the Fussen area in September for 2 days/1 night. Looking for recommendations on which castles to visit and/or tour - and anything fun to do with the little kids upon arrival.

My 4 year old LOVES the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (set at Neuschwanstein) so we definitely want to at least see the "chitty chitty bang bang castle" - but not sure if we should do the inside tour (is it worth it?!) or visit another castle and do a tour there? Linderhof looks beautiful. Is is possible to do both of these in 1 day (likely we will arrive to fussen area in the afternoon, have dinner, then do the castles the next day).

Any tips or recommendations welcome!

I would recommend seeing Hohenschwangau from the inside and Neuschwanstein only from the outside - Marienbrücke.
I have a soft spot for Linderhof, so I would always go inside as well.

I really enjoyed Linderhof and would definitely recommend going inside. For Neuschwanstein, check how much of it is open- the last time I was there (in 2023) quite a few rooms were closed. It is definitely possible to visit both of these in one day with your own transport (not sure about public transport).

True castle or not, Neuschwanstein is a must see for many travelers, myself included. Based on the comment not true castle, well, Disney Worlds wouldn’t have a single visitor. That said, I’d see Neuschwanstein from the outside and tour Hohenschwangau.

I thought the interior of Linderhof was the most elaborate and most worth seeing of Ludwig’s 3 castles, palaces.

We have toured all three, and each was definitely worth it. We did Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein on the same day. Then we saw Linderhof on a different trip to Germany. Each very different, and must see in my opinion.
