Any recommendation for who I should and shouldn't rent a car from? We will be starting at Hamburg Airport and returning at Munich airport. Total 10 days.
I recommend not to beg for bad stories about car rental companies because in a lot of cases it is not necessarily the fault of the rental car company.
If you go for one of the big ones you will do nothing wrong: Sixt (my favorite), Europcar and Avis. Hertz and Enterprise are also available but smaller market share.
Basic tip: Check before driving if every scratch and damage (out- and inside) is mentioned in the contract or hand-over protocol.
If temperatures are expected to be lower than 5-7° C (rule of thumb) winter tyres are required by law.
@Mark how reliable is Hertz? I want to rent in Wüzburg and drop it in Füssen but I've read some bad stories about Wuzburg location. The other option is Europcar and dropping it in Munich but I wanted to take the train to Munich.
I have never had a problem using US car rental companies in Europe (Budget, Hertz, etc.), but had a problem with Europcar.
We’ve had great luck with AutoEurope and Kemwell - the companies they resell typically have good service. We typically choose full coverage in the contract to minimize any issues that might happen during our trip and avoid the upsell at the rental counter.
