Recommendations for base(s) for 8 days in Germany

Hello All,

I am planning a trip to Germany sometime in September this year- this would be my 2nd visit and I was planning on covering few places in the Black Forest region and also visiting Monshchau, Cochem and Aachen.

I will be travelling by public transport during my Germany stay and will be travelling solo.

I will be flying into Frankfurt/Dusseldorf. I was looking to exploring Monshchau, Cochem and Aachen in the first 2-3 days.

Thereafter am planning to base myself in Freiburg to do few places in the Black Forest Region such as Gengenbach, Triberg, Schiltach and take a train ride on the Black Forest Railway and perhaps a day trip to Colmar, France.

I am looking for advice on where to base myself for the first 2-3 days to visit Monshchau, Cochem and Aachen and also whether Frieburg is a good option as a base.

Thank you in advance

Freiburg is fine. However there are some savings by staying in a town that offers the KONUS card for free local train and bus. I stay in Gengenbach ferienwohnung ( holiday apartments ) which I have found to ba a great value

Monschau is as good a place as any if you also want to see Aachen and Cochem. personally I think Aachen is worth 2-3 days on it's own. And I like Freiburg for wandering around the Black Forest; again it's a town you can easily spend a couple days in all on it's own. But if you're into watches you might consider Pforzheim.

Monschau should not be under consideration as a base town for travel. It has no train station. Might make sense to stay in Aachen, which puts you 1 hour from Monschau by bus and just under one hour from Cologne by train.

"Gengenbach, Triberg, Schiltach and take a train ride on the Black Forest Railway"

The first two lie right on the BF Railway. Schiltach is on the Kinzig Valley Railway. There are direct trains from Gengenbach to both Schiltach and Triberg. Gengenbach is your best bet of the three towns mentioned, IMHO. Gutach, Hausach, Haslach, and Steinach, also on the BF Railway, might also work well for you depending on what you are looking for in the way of accommodations, town services, etc. We stayed in Steinach a number of years back at this farmhouse apartment with deck:

Staying in Freiburg adds a lot of useless travel time for these destinations, and you might need to make the trip twice to see what you have in mind from there, especially if the Vogtsbauernhof open-air museum in Gutach is on your list. It's the most interesting museum you can visit if you are interested in traditional life in the Black Forest.

At the time we were in Steinach, a studio apartment just the right size for one person, situated under the apex of the farmhouse roof, was available for rent as well. I don't see it listed on the site above now. But you might ask about it. I will send you a pm with Herr Schöner's email addresses if you wish to inquire about either apartment (which is how I booked there.)

If you want to visit Colmar, just travel there and spend the night.

Freiburg is also a nice city- with a population of roughly 240,000, so it's a vastly different kind of place than most people think of when they hear "Black Forest."

Cochem is a distant destination, too far for a day trip. I think you would need additional days for a visit to Cochem and nearby Burg Eltz, etc.

One alternative would be to visit Cochem on your way to Gengenbach. This would be a long day...

1) Train from Aachen > Koblenz
2) Stow bags in Koblenz locker
3) Train from Koblenz > Cochem (around 45 minutes)
4) Return from Cochem > Koblenz
5) Train from Koblenz > Gengenbach (arriving late in the day.)

Or this alternative might work... Do 1) and 2) as above. Then...

3) Take train to Braubach (only 10 minutes, beautiful old-world town)
4) Take a tour of MARKSBURG Castle (intact, medieval castle)

Then train back to Koblenz for bags and continue to Gengenbach.
