recommendations for Alps trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen?

We're spending 4 nights, 3 days in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (two adults, 1 teen). Plan to train from Munich, then heading to Vienna afterward. We're pretty adventurous, easy-going, love the outdoors and history, budget-mindful.

Any recommendations for things to know and what to do? Alpine slide, Zugspitze or Alpspitze, castle tour... what else?

And, I'd love to avoid airbnb - any recommendations for a place to stay with a small kitchenette? (trying to save money by eating in sometimes).

Thanks!

I assume you will rent a car while in GP? There is an Alpine Coaster just outside Oberammergau. Im not sure which castle tour you are interested in, but Linderhof is only a half hour drive away. And the Partnach Gorge hike is an easy, enjoyable one that is nearby.

why rent a car? There's enough accesible by public transport to fill 3 days. Including go to Mittenwald and see what an old, pretty alpine village really looks like. And whilst you are there go up their mountain https://www.karwendelbahn.de/en/

Travel from Munich: is this from the airport and what time of day do you expect to start (time doesn't matter at weekends).

Travel to Vienna, go via Innsbruck

While living in Augsburg, when I was 35 years younger, I did the two day Zugspitze hike/climb (no difficult mountain climbing) twice with my teenagers. It was great.
If you don't do the climb, then go up to the top using the cable car or cog train.
Do the two castles.
Good place to stay is the Fraundorfer Guesthouse. Great restaurant.

Another vote for Partnachklam (Partnach Gorge). There is a summer Rodelbahn near the ski jump, which is not far from the gorge.

My usual recommendation is go to Ehrwald, Austria. Take the Ehrwalder Almbahn up and hike. I also like the easy walk between Ehrwald and Lermoos across the golf course and back. There are many holiday apartments in this region too. There are usually no checks at the boarder.
